Manchester United have been dealt with an early as midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out for three months after undergoing an ankle ligament surgery.
Louis van Gaal’s reign at Manchester United has suffered an early setback as midfielder Michael Carrick has been ruled out of action for three months after undergoing an ankle ligament surgery. His absence my force United to sign another midfielder this summer.
Michael Carrick, who joined Manchester United in 2006, has struggled with his fitness and form off late. The 32-year-old midfielder, who was one of the most consistent performers in the 2012-13 title winning season under Sir Alex Ferguson, failed to replicate that form under David Moyes last season. Yet he remains one of the most experienced and key member of the squad and was expected to form a partnership with new signing Ander Herrera in the midfield.
But the former Tottenham midfielder picked up a severe injury in training earlier this week and had to undergo an ankle ligament surgery. The Red Devils have confirmed that Carrick will be out for three months due to this.
“Louis van Gaal has been dealt an early blow as Manchester United manager with news that Michael Carrick has undergone surgery on an ankle ligament injury and will miss the start of the 2014/15 season.
“Carrick underwent an operation on his left ankle on Thursday morning having suffered the injury in training earlier this week. He will be out for between 10 and 12 weeks.” – Read an official statement released on Manchester United’s site.
His absence might force Manchester United to buy another midfielder this summer as the squad lacks a proper defensive midfielder. While Phil Jones can certainly do a job in that role, but van Gaal is likely to use him at the back. Moreover, Carrick’s recent struggles with his fitness suggest that United need a more long-term replacement for the Englishman.
Louis van Gaal has accepted that Carrick’s absence is a huge blow for the squad and the side will miss his experience in the middle.
“Michael was injured the day before and that’s a blow for me because he’s experienced. It’s very important we have experienced players.” – The Manchester United manager said.
