Manchester United have accepted the defeat in their attempts to sign Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich this transfer window, with one of David Moyes’s main targets expected to stay at the Bundesliga champions.

According to Jamie Jackson of the Guardian, indications coming out of Munich now suggest the German international will stay put, signing a new long-term deal to keep him at the Allianz Arena for the prime years in his footballing life. It was reported earlier this week by this website that, Kroos is keen to join United.

It is being reported that while United have not given up completely on Kroos and are prepared to keep all options open regarding the Germany international, there is a recognition that buying any elite class player is particularly tough due to the current market place. Even if Kroos were minded to leave Bayern, United would face stiff competition from a host of other top European clubs for his signature.

Kroos’ future at Bayern had been uncertain earlier this year when he had seemed out of favour in Pep Guardiola’s side. Earlier, this is what Guardiola said of Kroos: “He is an important player but things can move fast in football. Here today, gone tomorrow.”

However, any doubt that Kroos would stay in Munich has now severely diminished and any fans who witnessed his fantastic strike against Arsenal in the Champions League and especially against United in quarter finals will surely welcome the news.

Kroos’s contract with Bayern runs until 2015, so for as long as he has still not signed a new deal there is some hope the transfer could yet happen. Moyes’s team were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern on Wednesday. As United are seven points off fourth place with only five games remaining, the chances of the club playing European Cup football next season are remote. This could prove a factor in any decision Kroos may take.

Kroos has been in fine form all season, making six assists and chipping in with three goals in 31 appearances for Bayern this term. The midfielder has looked comfortable with Guardiola’s philosophy and no doubt, deserves his place at the club in the long-term future.

Volker Struth, the player’s agent, claimed earlier this week that Kroos will remain at Bayern. “We are confronted with a variety of rumours for months but at the moment I believe that Toni plays in Bavaria until 2015 at least,” he told the German newspaper Bild.

THT Verdict:

Manchester United are sure of missing on Champions League next season and it would be very difficult for them to lure the world class player like Kroos without it. And if Moyes cannot sign the midfielder it would be a major blow to the manager’s plans as he seeks a major overhaul of his squad in the close season.
