Long term Manchester City target Eliaquim Mangala has said that he would prefer a move to rivals Mancheser United or Chelsea instead.
Manchester City’s top target Eliaquim Mangala has told friends he would rather join Manchester United and is more favorable to Chelsea as well. The 23 year old apparently told friends he believes United or Chelsea is of a greater status to City.
It is believed that Louis van Gaal is not looking at the player seriously though, as he has doubts about the player’s temperament. While the Netherlands coach admires the player, he is unsure about the 23 year old’s maturity at the time and is believed to prefer Borrusia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels instead. Mangala was booked 12 times last season and sent off once.
City almost bought Mangala, along with teammate Fernando in January as coach Manuel Pellegrini has identified him as the perfect partner for Vincent Kompany in the City back-line, which can tend to be pretty vulnerable at times. The defender admitted that there were talks between City and Porto over his transfer. He said, “In January, there were discussions with City, but it fell through because the two clubs could not reach an agreement. Every player wants to play in the biggest clubs. I am an ambitious player and the team that can help me win titles is the one that interests me.”
He also talked about wanting to ply his trade in England, “The Premier League? That is no secret, to me it is the most beautiful league in the world. Whatever the opponent, you know it will be a fight. The game is intense, it is fast, and everyone is giving his very best.”
Mangala will demand a hefty fee with a reported £36.5 million release clause it his contract. Porto would be desperate to hold on to the defender as they would want to re-capture the Portuguese title from rivals Benfica next season.
In 2011, he moved to Porto for €7.5 million from Standard Liege. In his time in Portugal, he has played 92 games and has won two league titles in three seasons.
Having being raised up in Belgium, the player had the opportunity of representing the country in international football and was in fact asked to. But because of passport difficulties, this could never materialize and after his seriously impressive performances, French Football Federation acted quickly and the player was asked to represent Les Bleus. The 23 year old is in Didier Deschamps final 23 man squad for the World Cup as the fourth choice centre back.
Van Gaal needs to replace the departed centre-backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic and Mangala has the exact attributes needed to help United at the back and reinstate the club to its winning ways. But reports suggest the Dutch manager is very keen on getting Hummels from Borrusia Dortmund because of the player’s right mindset, maturity and calm behind the ball.
Chelsea are also interested in the player and have seemingly got a boost as the player also prefers a move to the Blues. He was quoted as saying, “The choice between Chelsea and Manchester City? I would say Chelsea because it is in London.”
Mourinho only has Gary Cahill and the ageing John Terry as his senior centre-backs and needs a quality player for that position to provide competition to the two. More importantly he needs a player who would eventually take over the reigns from Terry when he retires. Mangala is a great option for the London club and a deal seems plausible because Chelsea can afford the price, the player wants the move and Mourinho and Mangala share the same agent.
