Manchester City are plotting a January swoop for Juventus defender, Stephen Lichtsteiner, according to the Manchester Evening News. The 30 year old has been added to the list of targets which City would look to acquire in January. Stephen Lichtsteiner, meanwhile runs out of contract next summer and with Juventus playing coy, he could look to secure his future in a different country.
Boasting a broad framework, Stephen Lichtsteiner is known for his tireless engine like running which has given birth to nicknames such as Forrest Gump and The Swiss Express. The attacking right back is known for his scintillating attacking runs which pose a direct threat to the opposing team. Ever since his transfer from Lazio to Juventus, Stephen has been one of Serie A’s most consistent right backs. Defensively solid with an ability to red games, Lichtsteiner is one of the few players which come of attacking prowess mixed with tactical genius.
His crossing and ball-playing ability came to the fore in Conte’s 3-5-2 formation. As a result, he finished the season as Juve’s top assist-maker in the league with eight. His runs and athleticism has also earned him the nickname “The Swiss Express” since moving to Juventus.
Manchester City meanwhile, will send scouts to check on Lichtsteiner in the coming weeks before deciding whether to make a move for the Switzerland international. And according to reports, Serbian defender Matija Nastasic could be sent in the other direction as part of the deal. Nastasic has been robbed off his opportunity to start by new recruit Equalim Mangala and Nastasic’s only appearance for City this season came in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in August
Manchester City with this deal could easily acquire one of Serie A’s best attacking right back – meanwhile disposing an outcasted Matija Nastasic.
As it stands, Juventus could most likely not renew Lichtsteiner’s contract, as the Swiss International has demanded for more money. Juventus, who are already reeling lack of exercising financial muscle, might be interested to offload ‘The Swiss Express’ for a decent sum of money.
Meanwhile, Manchester City would be more than willing to see this deal fulfilled, as the Sky Blues have reeled with defensive frailties and with captain Vincent Kompany injury prone, Lichtsteiner seems to be a decent buy.
Although the 30 year old can operate as a Right Back, Lichtsteiner has filled in as Center Back for his country and could gift City with the same. Still, the 30 year old would be preffered to start in his favorable position and share duties with Pablo Zabaleta.
This deal looks like a decent arrangement where both Juventus and Manchester City could profit with the spoils of Stephen Lichtsteiner.
