The 36-year-old midfielder won three league titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one Champions League and a Europa League title during his during his 13 years stint at the club. But Chelsea didn’t offer him a new contract this summer with Jose Mourinho signing a host of new players as he looks to rebuild the squad following a disappointing season last time around.
Finally, after enduring another World Cup exit with England, Lampard decided to join MLS club New York City and expressed his delight at the prospect of facing newer challenges. But the England international won’t be able to participate till March, when the new season begins in USA, and he has completed a move back to the Premier League with reigning champions Manchester City.
Man City have signed Lampard on a six-month loan deal and it will mutually benefit both the parties. Lampard is keen to maintain his fitness till the pre-season preparations of New York City starts, while being in England will also help him gain the attention of England manager Roy Hodgson. Manchester City on the other hand will sign an experienced player, but most importantly, an English player to fill their quota.
Manuel Pellegrini said that Lampard will join the rest of the squad from Wednesday and insisted that he will get his opportunities with Man City playing in the Champions League.
“From Wednesday, he will start working with us and play for us until January.
“He’s a member of the squad and he will fight for his position.
“He knows we have a good team and we have a lot of games in the Champions League so he’s very important for our team.” – Pellegrini said.
Lampard is in line to face his former club Chelsea when these two sides face each other in the Premier League on 21st September and when asked whether the England international will play against Blues, Pellegrini said: “I will talk about that with him but he is a player for Manchester City and he will play every game that he needs to play”.
