Manchester City have confirmed the signing of French defender Eliaquim Mangala from Porto on a five-year contract.
France international Eliaquim Mangala has completed his long talked about move from Porto as became Manchester City’s sixth signing of the summer. The transfer fee involved in this deal is believed to be £42.9m, which makes him one of the costliest defender in the World.
The 23-year-old signed for Porto in 2011 from Standard Liege and established himself as a first team regular in the 2012-13 season, when the they went on to lift the league title. Mangala continued to impress last season and eventually made his debut for the French national side last year. Mangala was included the World Cup squad of France, but didn’t make any appearance in the tournament.
The Porto defender was heavily linked with a move away from Porto this summer with both Chelsea and Manchester City monitoring his progress. But it was the reigning Premier League Champions who finally signed him.

Mangala became City’s sixth signing of the season and their second from Porto, following the arrival of midfielder Fernando earlier this summer. The center back, who is highly rated, signed a five-year contract with the club.
Initial the deal was believed to be valued at £32m, but latest reports suggest that Manchester City ended up paying £42.9m for the center back. Third party ownership meant Porto received only 56.67% of the transfer fee, which is £24.4m. Third-party owner Doyen received £14.2m, while Standard Liege who had a clause to get the percentage of his transfer, received £4.3m.
“The FC Porto – Futebol, SAD, under Article 248 of the # 1 of the Securities Code, hereby informs the market that it has reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer, permanently, Sports subscription rights, and 56.67% of the economic rights it held, the professional footballer Eliaquim Mangala, the amount of € 30,500,000 (thirty million five hundred thousand euros).” – Read a statement released by Porto.

Mangala expressed his delight at the opportunity of joining a club like Manchester City and believes it is an important step in his development as a player.
“City is a top club in Europe. For me, it was an important step to leave Porto and join Manchester City in order to continue my progress. I want to win titles and I believe I can do this. I am ambitious and this is why I am here.
“I’m very happy to come to England because for me, the Premier League is the best league in the world. It is a very intense and very aggressive competition. There are plenty of goals, so it is also really nice to watch and I can’t wait to get started!
“The fact that Fernando is here is better because I played with him at Porto but there is also other players that I know like Sagna, Clichy and Nasri.
“I am really looking forward to the challenge, and I now need to settle in quickly and be ready for the season.” – Eliaquim Mangala said in an interview.
Manuel Pellegrini believes Mangala will have an immediate impact on the squad and has the potential to become one of the best defenders in Europe.
“I’m delighted to have added a player of Eliaquim’s quality in the squad ahead of the new season.
“He is already a fine player but in my opinion, he has all of the mental, physical, technical and tactical attributes to become one of Europe’s very best defenders.
“Eliaquim is a player I believe will make an immediate impact in the Premier League, thanks to his physicality, his reading of the game and quality on the ball.
