English Premier League Champions Manchester City are in dark over the future of Yaya Toure, in the meanwhile they are planning to strengthen their squad with the addition of FC Porto’s £15 Million Midfielder Fernando.

Manchester City were keen on adding FC Porto duo of Fernando Franciso Reges and Eliaquim Mangala in the recently concluded winter transfer window. 22-year-old French defender Eliaquim Mangala and 26-year-old Brazilian defensive midfielder Fernando were subject of a late bid from Manchester City. FC Porto were in tight financial situation, but were keen on raising the maximum funds from the sale of the in demand pair. £37.8 million was the amount quoted for the duo, and it was proved out to be above Manchester City’s evaluation then.

Manchester City were sanctioned by UEFA over FFP violations and the conditions prevents them from spending big on FC Porto duo. Eliaquim Mangala is the prized asset among the to with top sides across Europe looking for his signature. On the other hand Fernando appears like a relatively cheap target and the £15 Million quoted for his services presents Manchester City a very good option.

Fernando has been playing his trade in Portugal since 2007 and is well versed with the European competitions demand. UEFA Europa league winner in 2010-11 provides a very good shield in-front of Back 4 and Manchester City are keen to cover their bases this summer.

Daily Mail has reported that Manchester City are closing in on a deal with FC Porto over Fernando. Even though Ferenando signed contract extension at FC Porto recently, his value hasn’t been sky rocketed and Manchester City are wasting no time in plugging the holes in their squad.

Fernandiho and Yaya Toure’s double pivot was very effective for Manchester City last season. The lack of a genuine back up option had hurt their chances at some point of time, and the early exit from UEFA Champions League prompted them to improve the squad. Even though Manchester City are on the verge of signing Fernando to provide cover and competition for places, the future of Yaya Toure remains unclear following his recent revelations.

Yaya Toure is seemingly unhappy with Manchester City officials and is trying a maneuver a move to Barcelona or PSG in the summer. If the mercurial Yaya Toure departs the Etihad stadium in the summer, signing Fernando alone won’t be sufficient. Manchester City are monitoring the situation of FC Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and are planning to bring him back to England, if Yaya Toure opts for greener pastures after the world cup.

Manchester City are really close to signing Fernando and his signing will add more steel to their ranks. The arrival of another good player might even convince Yaya Toure to extend his stay at the Etihad stadium. But if the Ivorian leaves it will be a big shoes to fill in for the Brazilian. Can Fernando act as a cover as well as a replacement for Yaya Toure?
