Liverpool forward Luis Suarez is glad everything related to his summer transfer saga is over and the Kop faithful have still decided to invest in him.
The 27 year old had made many comments during the summer transfer window which clearly said that he no longer wished to be part of the Anfield unit and wanted to play Champions League football, which the Reds were unable to give him. This had prompted two cheeky bids from Arsenal and serious interest from PSG and Real Madrid.
However, 6 months through, the Uruguyan is happy with his stay, the way Liverpool are performing and has also signed a new long term contract. The former Ajax player credited Steven Gerrard as being the reason why he decided to stay. He said:
“He didn’t talk about me, or through me, in the press, but in person. In those moments I forgot that he was ‘world football great Gerrard’, a Liverpool legend, but as a humble person who spoke to me with all his heart for hours,
“He said I was the best forward he’d ever played with, which given the amazing strikers that he’s played with at Liverpool, was amazing for me to hear. I’ll never forget that.”
Brendan Rodgers and the Liverpool management also quickly got over the summer window where it looked like the Uruguay international would be heading out anytime and did great man-management with him. In fact, he was handed the captain’s armband when Steven Gerrard was out with injury, something which the fans too gave their approval on:
“It was weird – strange. I’d never imagined myself as Liverpool skipper. After everything that had happened with me, to retain the support of the club, the coach and my team-mates showed me they were happy to forget and forgive.
“It proved that my commitment to the club and to my team-mates is genuine and that I’m giving the maximum. Everyone here lives to help the club. Being Liverpool captain is something that validates you and makes you feel appreciated because there have been some fantastic leaders here.”
Luis Suarez’s looks settled and happy to be playing in the Red shirt and the summer saga looks very blurred for everyone. The 27 year old gives in his all everytime he steps on the pitch and is currently the highest scorer in the league and top assist grabber.
Luis Suarez’s new contract has at least kept him in Merseyside for the remainder of the season and was a way for Rodgers to make sure no club asks for him during the winter transfer window. However, Ian Rush talked about the contract and said that if Livepool don’t qualify for the Champions League, Suarez would be allowed to leave. Therefore, the qualification becomes even more important for the Reds. Thankfully for them, Liverpool look strong enough to continue to be in the top 4 by the end of the season, which means that Suarez would probably play in European nights at Anfield.
