Liverpool FC will host Borussia Dortmund in their last preseason friendly at Anfield tonight. Both teams finished second in their respective leagues last season, while both are looking to rebuild after losing their star strikers this summer. The similarities between these two clubs doesn’t end there as there is a strong bond between both set of supporters as both set of fans sing “You’ll never walk alone” at the start of the match. The atmosphere in this game is set to electric and both the teams have enough attacking flair in them to make this a night to remember.

Team news and tactics

Brendan Rodgers has some injury concerns ahead of this fixture and will miss some of his new signings. Adam Lallana continues his spell at the side-lines, while Lazar Markovic will also unlikely to take part in this game after sitting out the training session. Jon Flanagan, Fabio Borini and Daniel Agger were the other notable absentees from the training session. Both Borini and Agger face uncertain future at Anfield and won’t be in contention for selection in this game.

The good news for Liverpool though is the possible availability of Daniel Sturridge for this game. The England international flew home from the tour of America with a slight injury, but has recovered well and was present in the training with the rest of his team mates.

Simon Mignolet will resume his role in the goal, while new signing Dejan Lovren is set to make his Anfield debut after being denied the chance to join his new team mates in America due to visa problems. The former Southampton defender will pair up with Martin Skrtel at the center of the defence, while Glen Johnson starts at left back. Javier Manquillo, who was signed on loan from Atletico Madrid, will also make his debut in this game at right back.

Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, will form a three-man midfield. The German midfielder is likely to be preferred ahead of Joe Allen and his presence will provide more freedom to Gerrard at the center of the park.

Daniel Sturridge will once again lead the attack and in the absence of Markovic, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho. New signing Rickie Lambert will also come on as a substitute at some point of the match to make his debut at Anfield.

Expected starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Mignolet (GK); Manquillo, Lovren, Skrtel, Johnson; Gerrard, Can, Henderson; Sterling, Sturridge, Coutinho

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund are missing a number of their key players ahead of this fixture. Marco Reus continues his recovery from the injury at the side-lines, as his future at Dortmund remains under immense speculation. Another player who has been linked with a move away from the club this summer Mats Hummels, is yet to recover from his World Cup winning odyssey and is unavailable for selection in this game. Former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin will miss out on the return to Anfield after being ruled out for three weeks due to an inflamed tendon on his knee.

Australian goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak will be in goal with Dortmund looking for a long term replacement for Roman Weidenfeller. Lukasz Piszczek will start at right back, while Sokratis will partner Neven Subotic in the absence of Hummels at the center of the defence. Schmelzer, who was left out of the German World Cup winning squad this summer, will start at left back.

Sebastian Kehl, who recently stepped down as the captain of the side, will start alongside Oliver Kirch in the pivot. Jurgen Klopp has limited options at the center of the park in the absence of Sven Bender, Nuri Sahin and Ilkay Gundogan. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was once linked with a move to Liverpool before he joined Dortmund, will play behind the striker as the playmaker in attack.

Young Serbian attacker Milos Jojic will start on the right in the absence of Reus, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will provide width on the left. New signing Ciro Immobile will lead the attack, while Adrian Ramos will also come on as a substitute later on in the match.

Expected starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Langerak(GK); Piszczek, Subotic, Sokratis, Schmelzer; Kehl, Kirch; Jojic, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang; Immobile

Prediction: Liverpool 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
