Liverpool take on West Ham tonight and are boosted with the return of Martin Skrtel.
The Reds have not gotten over their defensive frailties of last season and Brendan Rodgers would be happy to field Skrtel in his back four. Against Ludogorets, both Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho had a pretty poor game and Liverpool were left to rue a late goal by the Bulgarian side, one which had the defense (including poor judgement on Mignolet’s part, to blame for it).
Brendan Rodgers has three defenders missing from action- Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan. The Northern Irishman was delighted with the news of the Slovakian coming back into the squad while he insisted that Johnson would be coming into training soon now. He said, “Martin Skrtel is back training with the team, which is great news for us. Glen Johnson should be back training over the course of the weekend.”
Last season’s revelation Jon Flanagan is likely to miss out on action for a ‘few’ months (reported to be two), after undergoing a knee surgery.
“Young Jon Flanagan, unfortunately, has just had an operation that will probably have him out for a few months – which is disappointing,” said the Liverpool boss.
Meanwhile, Daniel Sturridge, who sustained an injury while training for the national team can perhaps make his return for the Merseyside Derby next Saturday. Liverpool are not in their goal-scoring ways of last season and would be delighted with the news of the 24 year old England international returning sooner than expected. Joe Allen, will continue to miss out on things for a while, confirmed the manager.
Rodgers said, “Daniel Sturridge should hopefully be back training at some point next week. Joe Allen is still out and he’ll be out for a few weeks yet.”
West Ham will also be without a number of names for their clash with Liverpool with Matt Jarvis (thigh), Andy Carroll (ankle), Kevin Nolan (shoulder) and Joey O’Brien (knee) all missing and James Collins (hamstring) still a doubt.
Predicted Liverpool Starting 11 (4-4-2)- Mignolet; Manquillo, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno; Gerrard, Henderson, Lallana, Sterling; Borini, Balotelli
