Southampton defender Dejan Lovren has handed a transfer request

The 24 year old arrived from French side Lyon last summer for a sum of £7 million. Reports indicate that the player wants to team up with ex- teammate Rickie Lambert who has joint the Merseyside just a few days back. The Daily Mail reported:

Sportsmail Online can reveal that the central defender wrote an email to executive director Les Reed and chairman Ralph Krueger on May 30 with notice of his desire to leave St Mary’s this summer. In the email, the defender outlined his ambition to play Champions League football next season and wants to move this summer.

While there are other clubs also interested in the player, including Serie A giants AS Roma, it is reported that the player has made this transfer request to push for a move to Liverpool. He held talks with the club at the end of the season when Liverpool made their interest known to the player. The player, who is presently with his national team for the World Cup, also claims that the changes to management have also affected his decision. Executive chairman Nicola Cortese left in January and manager Mauricio Pochettino, who bought him to the club, has quit to become the new Tottenham boss.

A new manager has not been appointed by the club hierarchy but Reed said that the club were close to making the announcement as to who will lead the club in the coming season. Reed recently said,”We had possibly six to 10 candidates on our ongoing research list. We were delighted that by the time we got down to the final four, all four of them had been on our list originally. Things are going well and I’m hoping – what takes time with these things is the paperwork – but I’m hoping that we can get that sorted very quickly and the fans will be excited about an announcement coming up sooner rather than later.” Reports indicate that Hull manager Steve Bruce is the front runner for the job while Roberto Mancini recently quit Galatasaray and could fancy a return to the Premier League through Saints.

It was reported earlier this month that Liverpool made a £8million bid for the Croatian international. Brendan Rodgers is keen on strengthening his squad for next season where his side makes a return to Champions League after a five year absence. Liverpool would also want to make another title challenge after coming so close to winning the league. The Liverpool manager was praised for his style of play last season, but one aspect of the Reds’ received heavy criticism. It was the defence. The Merseyside club looked very shaky at the back and this has been cited as one of the reasons why the club lost the title. Liverpool are ready to amend this weakness of their’s and are already in advanced talks with Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno. With Lovren handing in a transfer request, the Reds would be able to get another player from their wish-list, and possibly below £10 million.
