Liverpool FC are set to fight it out in the transfer market for the acquisition of Manchester United target William Carvalho and Chelsea target Alberto Moreno

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo have labelled the Merseyside club as the favorites to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, despite Manchester United’s continuous interest in the acquisition of the Portuguese star. O Jogo claimed that Manchester United’s heavy interested in the player might have been primarily because of David Moyes and his departure could see the transfer targets change.

Carvalho plays in the heart of the pitch primarily in the holding role but can move further up or further back. He has been remarked as the ‘revelation of Portugal’ this season by the press as he has put on some great performances. Carvalho shields the Sporting defence efficiently and is also apt at starting attacks. He is now expected to represent Paulo Bento’s side in Brazil.

Reports indicate that Liverpool are interested in acquiring the player while La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Inter Milan were also interested. Carvalho’s buy-out clause is believed to be £37m and Sporting president made it very clear that he won’t take any lesser than that for the sale of his club’s asset and remarked:

“There is nothing inevitable, but I am almost certain, if not absolutely certain that William will continue at Sporting. You never know when a club might appear and be interested in taking him by paying the release clause. Now, William is very satisfied, he is happy and so are we.”

However, if Liverpool don’t face much competition for the player, they could negotiate and try to attain the services of the player for a little less than that.

THT Verdict:  Lucas, the defensive midfielder of the side, now looks like a shadow of his former self and Liverpool do need an upgrade on the spot. Carvalho has shone this season and made a good name for himself. He is young, and would fit into Brendan Rodgers scheme of things with ease. However, spending £37m to land him might deter off the Liverpool management.

Liverpool and Chelsea fighting it out for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno

Liverpool and Chelsea, both the clubs in need for full backs are ready to spurge cash for La Liga defender Alberto Moreno, according to reports. Moreno has had a great season and has rightfully been included in Spain’s 30 man provisional squad  by Vincent del Bosque.

The Blues were keen to sign Southampton’s young star Luke Shaw, but reports suggest that the 18 year old is almost certainly headed to Old Trafford. Ashley Cole has announced retirement from International football and could be set to leave Chelsea as well, following the expiry of his contract. Mourinho employed Cesar Azpilicueta, primarily a right back was employed as the left back this season and though Azpi did exceedingly well, Moreno looks like part of the long term plan for the Portuguese.

Liverpool meanwhile, are in desperate need to revamp their back-line. A large part of their failed title challenge had the blame being pinned on the the defence of the team. The Reds would be competing in the Champions League and need both quality and depth in the squad. Jose Enrique was injured through a large part of the season, and his future at the club is not certain. Enrique’s injury had young Jon Flanagan starting for the club. The Reds are now already being labelled as title-challengers next season and with the need to do well in their return to the Champions League, they would want an upgrade on Enrique/Flanagan.

THT Verdict: Moreno is the perfect epitome of a modern full back- while not failing at his primary defensive duties, he enjoys running at the opposition, committing defenders and delivering the crosses. Liverpool would greatly benefit from his acquisition and the Merseyside club should be willing to spend up to £15 million for the player.
