Liverpool might be ready to pounce on wanted Dutch defender Daley Blind, if reports in Netherlands are to be believed

Daley Blind has become an overnight sensation! Followers of the  Eredivisie, the Dutch League, were already aware of his qualities, but the influx of rumors regarding a potential transfer to one of the comparatively bigger leagues of Europe has increased after the 24 year old put on a very impressive performance in his country’s 5-1 win over Spain. Blind got two assists to his name in the match, which included that superb cross-field ball that put Robin van Persie through to score his remarkable header and level the scores.

There were recent reports of Manchester United making a bid for the player their manager Louis van Gaal is managing at the national side. It was suggested that van Gaal had asked United officials to make a swift move for Blind, who has reinvented by Ajax manager Frank de Boer. It was Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, who seem to have very close ties to the new United manager, who reported the news. De Telegraaf described Blind as a serious candidate for a move to Old Trafford over the summer with Luke Shaw’s move not sure. But Blind insisted that the Manchester United attention was only because of the presence of captain Robin van Persie and manager Louis van Gaal.

“All the attention is a very big thing now. But I try not to think about it too much and will stay with my feet on the ground. The link with Manchester United is easily made because Robin is playing there and Van Gaal takes over next season,” Goal.com quoted Blind as saying.

De Telegraaf have now reported that Liverpool have made preliminary inquiry for the availability of the player with Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars. They are joint by German giants Borrusia Dortmund, who are looking to remove Bayern Munich from the top next season with new signings after having already secured last season’s Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile

Blind is the son of Holland’s legendary sweeper Danny – Van Gaal’s assistant – and started his career as a left back before being turned into a defensive midfielder at Ajax. Blind has continued to excel in the Phillipe Lahm sort of way and has been tipped to do greater things in the next few years as he would be at the peak of his career.

The Reds are in the market for a new left-back. Sevilla are playing hardball over a deal for their prized asset Alberto Moreno and Liverpool want to be ready with a good enough back-up and have also targeted Sporting Lisbon’s Marcos Rojo in this effect. Dutch reports clearly indicate their interest in Blind.

THT Verdict- Unlikely

The Ajax man’s asking price is likely to be driven up beyond the £12m the Dutch side would have wanted as he has already started the World Cup on a sublime note and an imminent bidding war would lead to Ajax asking for plenty more. Liverpool might be unwilling to pay the sum and the progress on the Rojo front seems further along as Liverpool view the Lisbon star as an alternative to Alberto Moreno, who is their number one defensive target. With United’s Shaw talks reportedly halting- even if they are not, since Blind now primarily plays as a defensive midfielder- and the club being managed by the same man who is in charge of the national side, it seems that Blind would be more inclined to join Liverpool’s arch-rivals.
