Dejan Lovren completed his transfer from Southampton to Liverpool for an undisclosed fee. It is believed to be a £16m initial fee leading up to £20m with add ons.
Lovren became the fifth summer signing of the summer and has joined ex-teammates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.
Lovren, who has spoken of his wish to join Liverpool and did hand over a transfer request as well, was obviously esctatic after completiting his move.
He said, “It (completing a move to Liverpool) sounds amazing and it’s a dream come true. I’m happy and glad to be here; I’m proud and can’t wait to start. I’m most looking forward to Anfield, of course. I played there last season in front of the crowd singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. That is something very special for every player, every sportsman and every fan. I can’t wait to get started.
“Liverpool have already bought five players so you can see the club has big ambitions to carry on and not stop here. Of course, I want to be part of the club’s ambitions.
“Liverpool play amazing football so I can’t wait to join up with the team. It is a privilege to be here.”
The 25-year-old Croatia international defender has penned a five-year contract at Anfield. The Croat has also become Liverpool’s all time most expensive defender.
His message to Liverpool fans: ‘I’m a player that will give 100 per cent and I want to show that to the supporters because they deserve to see players who give 100 per cent. I know it is going to be something special to play in front of the fans at Anfield and I can’t wait.’
This is Brendan Rodgers’ first defensive addition of the summer and it was revealed that Lovren was his first choice all summer. Liverpool struggled at the back and Rodgers clearly wants to sort out that area.
He spoke on Lovren’s arrival, “He is a commanding and powerful presence and clearly has leadership skills, which is important; he fits the profile of player we are looking for. “He is still relatively young, so his peak years are ahead of him and I believe he will improve and progress even further with us. I’m looking forward to him arriving and working with us as we continue our preparations for the new season.”
