Liverpool are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen star Emre Can

Reports now suggest that the Liverpool boss has identified Leverkusen star Emre Can, who operates as a defensive midfielder, as someone he also wants at Anfield.

The 20 year old played 39 games for Leverkusen this season and grabbed four goals and five assists in the process. Lucas, the player Can would replace in the Liverpool lineup,  has been linked with Inter Milan and looks on his way out after having a sub-par season.

The German youngster likened to Bastian Schweinsteiger  is known for his versatility. The defensive midfielder can also play as a left back, centre midfielder and an attacking midfielder.

Brendan Rodgers has very recently spoken of his desire in reinforcing his squad with “multi-dimensional” players- players who can play a variety of roles. The players linked with a move to Liverpool have all had this in common. Adam Lallana, who looks close to Anfield move, is an example of players Rodgers wants to target.

“You’ll get some players who are specialists and who need to play in particular positions, but if we can get players in who are multi-functional, and can play in different roles and are multi-dimensional in their work, it sets us up and gives me more options as a coach”, said the Liverpool boss

In the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Can captained the German squad that won third place. Because of his Turkish ancestry, Can is eligible to represent Turkey at the international level but he prefers to play for Germany.

The then Germany U-17 coach Steffen Freund, who played as a defensive midfielder and represented Borrusia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur during his playing days and now is Tottenham’s assistant manager, spoke very highly of Emre Can and has nicknamed him ‘skipper’

“Emre is the most complete player I’ve ever seen in my career. And I have seen some. He has what it takes to make it to the top”

Can is likely to cost in the region of £12 million, but Rodgers is keen to bring in quality and is willing to spend that much on the young talent. Reports in Germany have claimed that the Reds have approached the Bundesliga side with an enquiry into Can’s availability, though the club themselves have yet to confirm the story. However any negotiations for the German player could be scuppered by Bayern Munich as the German giants allowed Can to join Leverkusen last summer but included a buy-back clause in it the deal.

THT Verdict- Likely

Brendan Rodgers has already spoken of his desire to attain versatile players in the summer window and Can definitely fits the bill. Apt at operating at different positions, the youngster does equally well in all of them. But the defensive midfield position is his preferred one and he naturally thrives there. The 20 year old shields the back-line from his position and also links up well with the other midfielders and attackers to start attacks. He has also impressed with the incredible maturity he has shown on and off the pitch. Liverpool need a defensive midfielder in their squad as an upgrade to Lucas, who is probably on his way off. Emre Can is the right player to target and the Reds should try hard to rope in the player.
