Liverpool are in talks with Victor Valdes for a surprise deadline day move for the Spaniard.

Valdes is a free agent now, after his release from his boyhood club Barcelona this summer. However, after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in March, which forced his exclusion from the Spain squad for the World Cup, the 32 year old will not be fit until December.

The 32-year-old Catalan keeper is being eyed by Brendan Rodgers as the cover for Simon Mignolet in goal. Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in a quality back-up goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign. Liverpool will be competing in four competitions which includes the Champions League and presently don’t have a back-up goalkeeper who can be put between the posts whenever the manager feels the need. Even though Brad Jones has shown his quality on the few occasions he got a chance to, it is difficult to imagine him face a top European club in the Champions League in case Simon Mignolet gets injured or suspended.

Valdes was set to move to moolah machines Monaco this summer, but his injury resulted in talks between the two sides collapsing.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers knows the importance of getting a quality goalkeeper this summer and had initially planned to move for Alex McCarthy from Reading. But the highly-rated England keeper looks set to join QPR for £6million. Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport said that the Reds were closing in on Argetina World Cup star Sergio Romero and had made a £1.6million (€2million) bid for the goalkeeper. The Sampdoria goalkeeper was looking close to joining the Merseyside club as his club had even bought Emiliano Viviano from Palermo as his replacement. However, with no reports of a deal progressing making rounds, it seemed that Liverpool had cooled their interest in the goalkeeper.

Rodgers said after his side’s 3-0 win over Tottenham that one player could probably still join the Reds camp, but mostly the business would be of selling.

“Players will mostly be going out rather than coming in,” Rodgers said.

“Maybe one more will come in. A few boys have been told they aren’t going to get much game time so they have been given that respect early on to help themselves find a club.”

The arrival of Valdes from Barcelona would be extremely good for the club. He will be providing Mignolet some much needed and serious competition and the fact that this is a free transfer makes it a no-risk scenario for the Liverpool management.

He would be missing from the first-team picture till November. But Brendan Rodgers is willing to wait and put Valdes through a tough  medical. The 32 year old can sign outside the transfer window because he is a free agent.
