Liverpool FC defender Tiago Ilori joins La Liga club Granada CF on loan until the end of the season.
The highly rated Portuguese defender joined Liverpool in the summer from Sporting. But he is yet to make an appearance for the Merseyside club since his £7 million move over to England. Liverpool boast of having a lot of depth at the back and Ilori was unlikely to get ahead of the likes of Skrtel, Sakho, Toure and Agger into the starting line-up. But he is someone for the future and was in requirement of regular first team action in order to continue his development as a footballer. There are no doubts that the 20-year-old has all the talents to make a name for himself on the international stage, so much so that the English FA held talks with him to change his nationality and represent England in the international stage.
A loan move was always on the cards and Valencia were initially considered as the frontrunners in the race for his signature from Liverpool. But Granada managed to strike a deal with Liverpool and have now completed the signing of Tiago Ilori till the end of this season.
“The 20-year-old centre-back will spend the remainder of the current campaign with the La Liga side, who are currently 10th in Spain’s top flight.
“Ilori joined the Reds on transfer deadline day last September, sealing a switch to Anfield from Portuguese giants Sporting CP.
“The Reds’ No.26 has yet to make a first-team appearance for the club, but has been named on the substitutes’ bench three times and featured for the U21s.” –Read a statement released on the official Liverpool site.
Granada are looking like a mid-table side this season, and will have to improve on their recent form, where they have won just one of their last five matches in all competitions, if they want to challenge for place in the Europa League next season. Lucas Alcaraz’s side have been quite solid at the back and have fifth best defensive record in the league this season, but they have lacked goals upfront. One of the main reason for the arrival of Ilori is the fact that both Pape Malickou Diakhate and Jeison Murillo have struggled with their fitness in recent times and Granda didn’t have enough depth at the back to deal with these concerns. Ilori won’t be first choice central defender straight away, but he is sure to get his chances at Los Carmenes.
