Liverpool were confident of completing the signing of Loic Remy from Queen Parks Rangers. However, it has been reported that the striker failed to clear his medical and the deal has hence collapsed.

Liverpool ECHO report: “Liverpool FC have refused to comment on why the deal won’t be completed but it is believed to be related to a problem with his medical. The 27-year-old underwent the usual medical tests before going to New York after the club granted him a few days off. Anfield sources put the delay in announcing his signing down to a minor paperwork issue but it appears that Liverpool were in fact seeking a second opinion over a medical issue. On the back of that advice they took the decision not to proceed with the transfer.”

Remy flew to Boston last week to link up with the squad on their tour of the United States of America. Liverpool had  triggered the release clause in his contract by then. Personal terms were also agreed between the two parties and the QPR striker who scored 14 goals on loan at Newcastle was set to be handed over the No 7 shirt vacated by Luis Suarez- following his transfer to Barcelona.

It is now understood that Brendan Rodgers will be looking at new targets and there is no way Remy’s pursuit can begin again. The Reds were targeting Wilfried Bony before they triggered Remy’s release clause and it is a possibility that Rodgers will try to bring the Swansea striker to Anfield. Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette, who enjoyed a terrific previous season with the French club, is also said to be on Rodgers’ radar.

Liverpool need to add to their strike force. The departure of Luis Suarez leaves much to be desired. Rickie Lambert has been brought in already. Fabio Borini’s future with the Reds in uncertain and if the Italian goes to Sunderland, Liverpool will have only two strikers in the team. Rodgers will need to act fast and bring in a forward before the start of the season, so the player has time to adjust to his new surroundings.

This is the second blow for Liverpool in the last two days as Adam Lallana, who was set to make his Liverpool debut against Olympiakos this evening, has been ruled out for upto six weeks with injury.

Rodgers said at a press conference, ‘It was very disappointing, he’s going to be out for 4-6 weeks. He had looked fantastic in training, bless him. It was an injury that he received in a simple drill with no pressure on him. We are hopeful that he will come back sooner rather than later but there is no rush on him.’
