Last season’s breakthrough performer for Liverpool, Jon Flanagan is set to renew his contract with the Reds.
The Liverpool full-back put on some great performances for the club last season, which also resulted in him being named in England’s preliminary World Cup squad and a first cap for his country. He was likened to Brazilian legend Cafu, and Cafu himself tweeted in this regard, along with meeting Flanagan at Anfield last season.
Flanagan reflected, “I just kept my head down, worked hard and finally I got a chance. Last season couldn’t have gone any better for me. Playing for England was another great experience. I didn’t expect to get on. It was an amazing way for the season to finish.”
Flanagan has revealed he is confident of signing a new contract and committing to Liverpool in the not too distant future.
“There have been some talks and I should be signing a new contract soon. It would be reward for all the hard work I’ve put in. It would be great for me and great for my family as well. All I’ve ever wanted is to play for Liverpool and I want to stay here for as long as I possibly can.”
Flanagan is traditionally a right-back, but last season he played as a left back. He replaced the injured Jose Enrique and displaced Aly Cisokkho from the starting line-up. The arrival of full-backs Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno in this window will add competition for the starting spot but the young Englishman is not afraid of it and says it will challenge him further to perform well.
“A massive club like Liverpool are always going to sign top players Moreno and Manquillo play in my position but that will just make me work harder.Having good players around you pushes you on,” he said
“Hopefully I’ll get back in the team. Things went well for me last season and I want to build on that.”
Meanwhile Brendan Rodgers too spoke about the imminent new deal and said that Flanagan deserves it completely. He said, “He’s been unfortunate with injuries. He’s had a number of injuries during the time I’ve been in here, and before I came in. Just looking at his injury record, it hasn’t been great. But he’s a young kid who I really, really want to be an important member of our squad. He deserves a new deal. He did exceptionally well last season and he’s recovering well from his injury. We’re hoping he’ll be back soon – and with a new deal as well.”
Jordan Ibe joins Derby County on loan
Liverpool confirmed that highly rated 18 year old Jordon Ibe joined Derby County on a season-long loan deal. Ibe has made three appearances for the Reds’ first team since a debut against Queens Park Rangers in May 2013. He is highly rated in Merseyside and put on impressive performances in the pre-season tour.
Many think the player can become even better than Raheem Sterling, who was part of the same academy. Ibe’s chances in the first team would have been very less, if at all and a loan move is a good step for his development.
