Liverpool finally table a bid for Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri. No offers from Juventus or any other club so far.
Liverpool are favorites to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich after the Reds finally lodged a bid for the winger, according to reports in Swiss newspaper Blick
Liverpool have been linked with Bayern Munich and Switzerland winger Xherdan Shaqiri for a long while. The links, in fact, started when Rodgers’ pursuit of Mohamed Salah got hijacked successfully by Jose Mourinho. Since then, Shaqiri has been constantly linked with Liverpool and he and his brother have both made comments on the matter too.
German paper Bild reported earlier last month that the Reds began preliminary talks over a possible move and were willing to offer £16m for the 22 year old. However, since then Liverpool acquired Adam Lallana from Southampton and Lazar Markovic from Benfica, resulting in these rumors dying down. Recently, reports in Italy suggested that Juventus are keen to play on the Swiss star’s unhappiness in Bavaria by tempting him to Turin with a £15m move. They were said to be leading the race too.
However, Swiss reports claim that Liverpool are in pole position to sign the player after they finally made a bid for the player. The bid is supposed to be in the region of £14.2m. In fact, there are no bids from any other suitors so far.
Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer recently said that Bayern want to retain the services of Shaqiri as he is a player for their future, “Xherdan is an important player for the future. There are no thoughts at all about selling him.”
But the player has made himself clear and has stated that he is focused on the present and it seems that he wants to leave the Bavarian giants for a team that can offer him more game time.
Now ex- Switzerland international and Shaqiri’s former teammate Ramon Vega has said that the player would make a great addition for the Merseyside club.
“He’s already at a great team in Bayern Munich, and you can’t forget that. But, there is no doubt he would be a great addition to the Premier League if a club like Liverpool manage to sign him”, said Vega
“They are a top club, and he he has a great attitude to succeed whenever he plays.”
Bayern are keen on extending the player’s contract. This, however, can be to increase his market value too and get around £5m more for the talented Swiss player. It remains to be seen if Shaqiri would stay with the club next season as Pep Guardiola has enough players to fall back on without him as well.
For Liverpool, he would be an ideal addition. He operates like an inward forward from the left flank, and his addition could mean Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t have to spend a huge sum on bringing in another dangerous forward. For about £15m, Shaqiri seems absolutely worth his price and the ‘magic dwarf’ might turn out to be Liverpool’s signing of the window.
