Liverpool and Denmark defender Daniel Agger has refused to rule out a move away from the club while insisting he wants to prove his worth to Brendan Rodgers.

Daniel Agger was largely marginalized for Liverpool’s campaign last season. He started only 16 Premier League games. He was receded to the bench with Mamadou Sakho’s arrival from PSG. The Denmark captain has been wanted by Napoli and Barcelona is the recent past and has now been linked with a return to former club Brondby.

The fan-favorite centre back insisted that he wants to prove to the manager that he is worth being used more regularly. However, he has insisted that being kept on the bench for most parts of last season was ‘not acceptable’ for him.

“It is no secret that I had problems last season and I am considering things,” Agger told Danish newspaper BT.

“How things turned out last season is not acceptable for me.

“I am here now and it is up to me to show the coach that I should play.”

Commenting on the links to former side Brondby, that he left in January 2006 to make the switch to Liverpool, Agger said, “Many things can happen in football and I do not want to exclude anything,”

Liverpool are set to sign Southampton defender Dejan Lovren as reports in Croatian media suggest that Saints had agreed a deal for the 25 year old centre back. His arrival could mean further competition for Agger. Manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the arrival of a new central defender wouldn’t mean that Agger would have to leave the club. Rodgers said, “Agger is one of the best players we have. He has been unlucky because he has been plagued by injuries last season. He is a good player, he is experienced and we can use that in the upcoming season.”

Liverpool’s defensive woes were glaring last season and former defender Jamie Carragher said at the end of the season, that Brendan Rodgers should was clearly not a fan of the defender and should have used ‘leader’ Agger more.

“I don’t think there’s enough leadership or communication in the two centre-backs or the goalkeeper especially. Sakho is new. Brendan Rodgers has gone with him and Skrtel as a partnership and he’s got Daniel Agger on the bench. I’ve mentioned before I don’t think he’s the biggest fan of Daniel Agger and that’s why he always seems to leave him out. That’s 17 games Sakho and Skrtel have played together now and one clean sheet. They always concede goals whenever they play together.”
