Liverpool are close to completing the signing of Southampton centre-back, Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool are close to finalizing the deal for Saints defender Dejan Lovren and the player can be unveiled as an official Liverpool player as early as Monday.

Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre has flown back to the UK from the club’s tour of the United States of America in order to complete the transfer. Lovren is scheduled to undergo his medical and sort out personal terms in Liverpool today. Echo report that if everything goes as per plan, Lovren will link up with the Reds squad in either New York or Charlotte next week.

The Reds have been linked with the player all summer and Brendan Rodgers has identified the Croatian international as his top defensive target. Lovren himself has expressed his desire to play for Liverpool very early on. He has in fact, blasted the St. Mary’s outfit regarding them not accepting or informing him about the first bid made for him. In that interview, the player went as far as claiming his head was already at Liverpool.

The Croatian press reported last week that Lovren was set to complete a £16million Reds switch ‘in the coming days’, though that fee could rise to around £20million in add-ons. If the player is purchased at that sum, he will become Liverpool’s most expensive defensive singing.

Liverpool have already made attacking additions with Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic already signed. They’ve also purchased highly rated youngster Emre Can, who can operate in various positions- in the midfield and in defense. Lovren will be the Merseyside club’s first defensive addition. Liverpool are thought to be also closing in on a loan signing of Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid. The player is set to sign a loan deal with the option of making it permanent at the end of the season. Meanwhile, it is also believed that QPR striker Loic Remy and Belgium starlet Divock Origi will sign for the Premier League side in the coming days, which would take Brendan Rodgers’ summer spending to close to £100million.

Earlier manager Ronald Koeman told Fox Sports that he didn’t want to lose the Croat, but was prepared for his departure for a ‘top price’. Saints are targeting Dutch international Ron Vlaar as his replacement, and the manager spoke in this regard. He said,”Ron [Vlaar] would definitely be an option. For now, Dejan can still play with us. I don’t want to lose him but, if he leaves he will only go for a top price. But I think he won’t be cheap right now. Let’s just wait and see. We just have to wait how it develops”
