Liverpool look set to complete the signing of Southampton defender Dejan Lovren in the next 2 days.

Liverpool have agreed a £16m bid to sign Croatia and Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, according to reports in Croatia. The report suggests Lovren will sign a four-year deal with Liverpool in the next two days, and fly out to the USA to meet up with Brendan Rodgers and the rest of the squad for Liverpool’s pre-season tour.

Earlier manager Ronald Koeman told Fox Sports that he didn’t want to lose the Croat, but is prepared for his departure for a ‘top price’. Saints are targeting Dutch international Ron Vlaar as his replacement, and the manager spoke in this regard. He said,”Ron [Vlaar] would definitely be an option. For now, Dejan can still play with us. I don’t want to lose him but, if he leaves he will only go for a top price. But I think he won’t be cheap right now. Let’s just wait and see. We just have to wait how it develops”

The 25 year old was brought in to Southampton by Mauricio Pochettino last summer for a sum of  £8.5m. Lovren’s departure from St.Mary’s looks imminent as he has is unhappy at Southampton and has stated he wants a move to Liverpool. He spoke about his dissatisfaction at Southampton’s lack of ambition. The defender said, ” Look, I’d gladly stay in Southampton if the club had any ambitions, if they kept the key players. When I decided to go to Southampton, many people were surprised, but I went because the people at the club had great ambition. It was because of that I’d agreed to sign for Southampton. When the chairman left, and Pochettino was going too as early as April, I realised things had fallen apart.”The player later said that he was upset that the club didn’t inform him of Liverpool’s bid and that he wanted to join Liverpool, “Liverpool sent the offer and the club haven’t informed me. Not even about the subsequent Liverpool bids. That wasn’t right. I found out about the bid from other people which disappointed me and I realised I’ve got no business staying at Southampton. Frankly, my head is already at Liverpool.”

Liverpool enjoyed a stellar season last time around, and came agonizingly close to winning the title. One of the reasons for them to miss out was cited as their leaky defence. Manager Brendan Rodgers wants to make amends to that, and also understands the value of depth in the squad for the coming campaign, where the Reds make a return to the Champions League after five years.

The Merseyside club have had a  £20m bid turned down for him, so for Saints to concede the player for a lesser price is a little shocking, and could this report could turn out to be untrue. However, considering he so desperately wants to leave the club and Brendan Rodgers is clearly interested in securing his services, the transfer looks imminent and Lovren might turn out to be third player Liverpool bring in from Southampton this summer.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that the arrival of a new central defender wouldn’t mean that fan favorite Daniel Agger would leave the club. Rodgers said, “Agger is one of the best players we have. He has been unlucky because he has been plagued by injuries last season. He is a good player, he is experienced and we can use that in the upcoming season.”
