Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that while Frank Lampard is the part of a glorious history of the club, Cesc Fabregas is the future.
Frank Lampard, who made 648 appearances for Chelsea since signing for them in 2001, was released by the Blues this summer and the England international joined MLS club New York City on a two-year contract. But with the MLS season starting in March, he has signed for Manchester City on a six-moth loan deal as he looks to keep up his fitness before the start of the next season.
Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was signed this summer by the London club and the Spaniard is expected to fill in the shoes vacated by Lampard. Manager Jose Mourinho is impressed by Fabregas’ ability as a player and is confident of being the future of the club.
“Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget. Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment. My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield.” – The Chelsea manager said.
Chelsea had a pretty successful preseason campaign where all the new signings impressed in the outings. Some of the players, who were on a longer break after participation in the World Cup, have also re-joined the squad and Mourinho is confident that his side will be read for the opener against Burnley.
“It’s been a difficult pre-season because we started with seven players,.
“After that, step by step, players were arriving after the World Cup and holidays. Finally, in this last week we’ve had everybody together but obviously not everyone is prepared. For example, Ivanovic has been training for one month, Schurrle has trained for five days, so there is a big difference between players.
“We have to play the first league match next weekend and we will be ready for that.” – Mourinho added.
Meanwhile, Didier Drogba, who signed a one-year contract with Chelsea to return to Stamford Bridge, will likely miss Chelsea’s opening game after twisting his ankle in their last preseason game against Ferencvaros.
“I twisted my ankle and I couldn’t continue. In the next few days we are going to do some treatment and I hope everything will be better.” – Drogba said.
