Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder Koke has insisted that despite his nation crashing out of the competition early on, nobody should doubt the team

Spain have come under a lot of criticism as the defending World Champions failed to put up any sort of fight and lost their opening two fixtures and have crashed out of the ongoing World Cup in Brazil. Spain lost the first match 5-1 against a devastating Netherlands. Their next game was against Chile, who managed to win 2-0 against them. It proved to be a disastrous campaign for the World Champions as their dominance over football which lasted for six years came to an end.

22 year old Koke has said that Spain will try to win their last match against Australia as they ‘deserve to’. He also said that despite La Furia Roja’s catastrophic campaign, the side shouldn’t be doubted.

“Things didn’t go to plan in our first two games and we have to look at our mistakes and try to learn from them,” he told a Press conference.

“We’re going to try and end with a win against Australia before going on holiday, because we deserve that as well.

“We’re professionals and we’re working hard. We have five days to prepare for a game in which we have to put in a good performance and win. But nobody should doubt this team.”

He also said that the incoming generation of players for the national side, that include him, Alberto Moreno, Gerard Deulofeu (Moreno was axed from the 30 man squad for the World Cup later on, while Deulofeu was called to cover the injured Jesus Navas for a friendly before the tournament which indicated how close he is to making the senior side) among others will try to replicate what the likes of Alonso, Xavi, Casillas have done for Spain.

“It will very difficult for the youngsters to match what this team has done because it’s an historic achievement. We will try to be up to the task”, he said

The World Cup could prove to be the last one for some of the Spanish veterans. Xabi Alonso, who spoke at length and revealed that his side didn’t have the hunger and ambition to put up a good fight, has decided to call it quits from international football. The player has won two European Championships and a World Cup with his nation. Koke has said that he wishes 34 year old Xavi, still continues with the national team for a long time. The Barcelona midfielder was dropped from Spain’s match against Chile, after a sub-par game against Netherlands.

“We all know how much quality Xavi has and a large part of the success of the national team is down to him. Hopefully he will continue with this group a long time yet because it is a luxury for us and the national team”, said the Atletico Madrid midfielder
