Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur target Morgan Schneiderlin will remain at the club, despite handing over a transfer request.
After days of speculation recent report suggested that Morgan Schneiderlin has handed over a transfer request to push through a move to Tottenham Hotspur. But Southampton manager Ronald Koeman insists that the midfielder will remain at St Mary’s Stadium this season.
Schneiderlin’s future at Southampton has come under a lot of speculation this summer with both Arsenal and Tottenham being linked with a move for the Frenchman. Recent reports suggest that the midfielder would prefer a move to White Hart Lane due to the presence of former Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino, and has handed over a transfer request after Southampton refused to allow any more departures.
Morgan Schneiderlin joined Southampton in 2008 and immediately established himself in the starting eleven. The 24-year-old was a key member of the squad which won promotion back to the Premier League. Schneiderlin has produced some wonderful performances in the midfield for the Saints and is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the league currently.
His consistency for Southampton has earned him a lot of admirers and a host of clubs have monitored his progress. This summer he has been linked with a move away from St Mary’s Stadium with both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur interested in signing him.
Schneiderlin recently expressed his displeasure at the whole situation through a tweet from his account, which further fuelled reports of a transfer request. But the midfielder has returned to training with his team-mates, and manager Ronal Koeman is convinced that the player will stay at the club. The Dutchman also revealed that Schneiderlin could be part of the their next pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.
“It’s the decision of the board but I don’t talk about it. He’s a player at Southampton and he will continue as a player at Southampton.
“But I don’t like to talk about that situation. I spoke to Morgan two days ago and he is still not in the shape to play a friendly at this level. He needs more training sessions. If he’s ready he will play.
“Normally he will play next week against Bayer Leverkusen [Southampton’s final pre-season friendly].” – Koeman said.
The Southampton manager also revealed that the club is working behind the scenes to sign 2-3 more players, but refused to provide any details about their reported interest in Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.
“There is no news on that [Fraser Forster] and still no news on other players. We are close to signing two or three players and we hope to do that by this weekend.
“I won’t talk about any of the players but we are looking to bring in players into this squad at the level that we need to have a good season.” – He added.
