The Portuguese superstar is reported to be suffering with patellar tendinitis, raising alarms in the Portuguese camp

The Portuguese team who is training at the Florham Park, set a major blow after revelation that the star player may well miss the World Cup due to ever-growing injury issues.

“Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo has a muscle injury on the back of his left thigh as well as left-leg patellar tendinitis,” the Portuguese Football Association said in a report on his medical issues. The report continued “Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul Meireles carried out the programs pre-established by the medical department for their injuries, specific treatments and rehabilitation exercises on the field.”

Along with Ronaldo-three other main players Pepe, Raul Meireles, Beto are facing injury woes. Ronaldo was not part of their first warm up match against Greece which ended in a goalless draw, clearly showing Portugal’s over-dependence on him.

The FIFA Ballon d’Or winner as best footballer of last year, He scored 31 goals in 30 appearances in La Liga this season, Ronaldo also played an important role in Real Madrid’s Champions League success this year, winning the European Golden Shoe with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

As the season reached its last quarter, Ronaldo started to struggle with injury problems, and Real Madrid really missed his brilliance on the field as they were unable to grasp in the La Liga title.

Speaking to reporter Ronaldo’s teammate and Manchester United midfielder Nani said “We hope that Cristiano is in good enough shape to play — and to help the team,”

He continued “Ronaldo is going well, and he is relaxed about it … Things are going the right way,”

“If for some reason (Ronaldo) is not there, whoever is there playing has to be confident in their ability to get the job done,”  Nani confirmed.

“The World Cup is a one-of-a-kind challenge. I want to be fully fit, and in top form alongside my teammates. I could not be there last time, but happily, I am here now,” said Nani, who missed the previous world cup due to an injury.

If Cristiano Ronaldo misses the world cup, it will not just be a loss for Portugal but for the entire tournament. His world wide popularity has made him one of the prime attractions of this world cup and his departure will definitely affect the viewership ratings in an adverse way.

Portugal are slotted in Group G at the World Cup and will face Germany on June 16. This group also includes USA and Ghana.
