FC Pune City and FC Goa will both be looking for their maiden win in the Indian Super League (ISL) when they take on each other at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex Stadium on Sunday. FC Pune City, who were thrashed 5-0 by Mumbai City FC in their last outing, are currently seventh in the standings with just a solitary point from two games. FC Goa too have endured a difficult start to the campaign and presently find themselves just a place above FC Pune City with one point from three fixtures. Thus, the weekend’s clash in Pune is a must win game for both sides.
Team News and Tactical Brief:
FC Pune City
Franco Colomba’s side began their ISL adventure with a goalless draw against Delhi Dynamos before succumbing to a 5-0 loss in the Maharashtra derby last weekend. FC Pune City are yet to click in the competition and have problems aplenty in every area of the pitch. Despite having the likes of David Trezeguet and Dudu Omagbemi in their ranks, the Pune-based franchise are yet to find the back of the net. In addition, the heavy loss against Mumbai City FC showed that FC Pune City have plenty of work to do in the defensive areas as well. Pune’s midfielders are also not working as a cohesive unit, which adds to their woes. However, on a positive note, FC Pune City will be the fresher side of the two as FC Goa will be taking to the field after just three days following their grueling contest against Atletico de Kolkata on Thursday. FC Pune City will be also keen to give their fans something to cheer about in the franchise’s first home game of the ISL.
Probable Starting XI: Emanuele Belardi, Bruno Cirillo, Daniele Magliocchetti, Dharmaraj Ravanan, Pritam Kotal, Lenny Rodrigues, Manish Maithani, Joaquim Abranches, Kostas Katsouranis, Dudu Omagbemi, David Trezeguet
FC Goa have been unlucky in the ISL thus far, as their performances have not matched the desired results. Zico’s side, who lost 2-1 to Atletico de Kolkata earlier in the week, dominated large portions of the match and were en route to their first win in the competition. However, two late strikes from Cavin Lobo helped the Kolkata outfit edge the contest and handed FC Goa their second defeat in three games. But Goa can take heart from their display against Kolkata, and a similar performance versus fellow strugglers FC Pune City can help them to bag the full three points. Former Arsenal full-back Andre Santos, who has been deployed in a more advanced role by Zico, found the back of the net against Atletico de Kolkata with a sumptuous drive. And FC Goal will be relying on the Brazilian to provide more of the same on Sunday. Ranti Martins and defender Gregory Arnolin also possess the quality to trouble FC Pune City’s defence.
Probable Starting XI: Jan Seda, Narayan Das, Youness Bengelloun, Gregory Arnolin, Debabrata Roy, Peter Carvalho, Andre Santos, Robert Pires, Gabriel Fernandes, Holicharan Narzary, Ranti Martins
FC Pune City 1-2 FC Goa
Both teams will be desperate to register their first win in the ISL, but current form and Zico’s astuteness make FC Goa slight favourites in this battle.
