Former FC Barcelona midfielder Gabri has said that his close friend and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has always dreamt of playing for the Catalan giants.
Suarez’s brilliant performances for Liverpool since his move to Anfield from Ajax has not gone unnoticed in Europe as the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are vying for the signature of the Uruguay international this summer. However, the management of Liverpool is desperate to hold their biggest star for the next season.
Gabri said during his interview to Spanish newspaper La Xarxa that his friend Suarez has always wanted to play for FC Barcelona. “He’s a player that has always considered coming here one day, and if he did it would make me very happy.”
Gabri also feels that a move to FC Barcelona will be a giant step ahead for the talented Uruguayan. “I think Barca would be making a great signing. He would adapt very quickly because of his hunger and he would be a very good fit for the club. He also has his wife’s family in Barcelona.”
Suarez won the PFA Player of the Year award for his excellent displays for Liverpool last year and Gabri has no doubt in his mind that his friend has the quality to succeed at a demanding club like FC Barcelona.
“He’s mature as a footballer. He’s a player with character and personality. If he were to come to Barcelona he would have what it takes to deal with the pressure of playing for a club like Barca.
“Luis Suarez is a goal scorer. He can score goals out of practically nothing. His position is as a number 9, but he’s also played on the wing sometimes.
“He’s good with his head, he’s fast, and he’s a very complete player who’s in great form.”
Gabri and Suarez played together at Dutch club Ajax and the Spanish midfielder thinks that this spell together helped him to get to know the Uruguayan. “We got to know each other at Ajax and became very good friends. We speak the same language and that helped him to adapt to the team and to life in Holland. Our wives also became friends and we have kept in touch.”
Reportedly, FC Barcelona are ready to sell Alexis Sanchez and Pedro Rodriguez this summer. Sporting Director Andoni Zubizaretta and coach Luis Enrique are looking for the world class players to replace this duo and the likes of Kun Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain have also been linked with a move to Catalunya.
However, eternal rivals of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid are currently the frontrunners for the signature of Suarez.
