Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger is ready to bid farewell to Thomas Vermaelen and Spanish giants FC Barcelona are ready to step up the pursuit of this Manchester United target.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has already said that he does not expect Vermaelen to extend his contract and now, Spanish giants FC Barcelona have set their sights on defender. Reports in England has claimed earlier that Manchester United are the favorites to sign Vermaelen but the entry of FC Barcelona is expected to start the bidding war between these two giants.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo has confirmed the interest of FC Barcelona today. El Mundo report claims that: “Despite being club captain, Vermaelen’s future is up in the air and Wenger last week admitted that he ‘cannot guarantee’ that the Belgian will still be at Arsenal when the season starts. Manchester United, who are desperate to sign central defensive cover this summer, looked like his most likely destination but they have so far failed to agree a deal.”

Vermaelen has only one year left in his contract and Arsenal does not want to lose the player for free next summer and hence, the management is ready to listen to the offers for the players. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is a big admirer of Vermaelen and the Old Trafford side is expected to make a first offer for the player in coming days.

FC Barcelona have already announced the capture of Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia but it seems that Sporting Director Andoni Zubizaretta and coach Luis Enrque are looking to add some more depth to the biggest area of concern of their squad. Prior to the signing of Mathieu, FC Barcelona only had Gerard Pique and Marc Bartra as specialist central defenders in their squad and coach Gerardo Martino used Javier Macherano as a makeshift defender last season.

FC Barcelona Want To Go Back To Enjoying It Again: Iniesta

FC Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has said that the squad is totally committed now and wants to get back to winning ways again.

Iniesta was speaking in a press conference organized by the club. He said: “Our desire to put in a good year is maximum. Are aims are to win titles and give a good impression right from the start of the year. We are all looking forward to enjoying the game as a team and as Barça fans once again.”

FC Barcelona has appointed Luis Enrique as the new boss and Iniesta feels that there are certain similarities with the summer of 2008, when Guardiola era started. “Maybe there are certain similarities regarding the moment everything comes together, the changes in the team, the new manager; but every situation is different, although the stage is the same.”
