Tottenham are closing in on Liverpool target Yevhen Konoplyanka – the winger who was almost certainly tipped to be a Liverpool player on the first of February.

The Reds nearly signed the 24-year-old Dnipro star in a £15m deadline day deal but the move did not transpire, reportedly due to the ‘technicalities’, but journalists later claimed that the president of the club was ‘impossible to negotiate with’.

However, Dnirpo’s president and Ukrainian billionaire Ihor Kolomoyskyi has now claimed that that the hugely rated Ukrainian player is close to becoming a Spurs star in the summer as the two clubs are engaging in talks which are ‘on another level’.

“I talked with Konoplyanka. Of course, he had regrets, but [the move to Liverpool] failed purely due to technical reasons,” Kolomoyskyi told Ukrainian website Prosport.

“I’m talking with the Tottenham president. He wants Konoplyanka. We’re negotiating and may even be close to signing a contract.

“Konoplyanka? Liverpool was just some representatives talking on the phone. Talks with Spurs is entirely on another level.

“If Spurs want Konoplyanka, I’d happily sell. London life is better than Liverpool. Spurs’ interest is strong and advanced.”

This news would come as a huge blow to Liverpool as the Reds were still keen on bringing the 25 year old to Anfield in the summer. Konoplyanka himself said that he was left disappointed after negotiations between the two sides did not materialize, but was still looking forward to the opportunity in the summer.

This would not be the first time when Spurs have hijacked a move for a Liverpool target. The club is well aware of Levy’s swoop ins as it has happened in the past with the likes of Sigurdsson, Eriksen etc.

However, the player himself would probably prefer a move to Liverpool as the Reds are enjoying a great time in the league where they have surpassed every expectation. Tottenham, on the other hand, are fighting hard for a European spot and based on current form, might be eluded of it

THT Verdict: Likely

If the president of the club is talking this way, the likelihood of this transfer happening is very high come the summer. Tottenham would be successful in stealing another one of Liverpool’s targets away. The North London club would benefit from the player as they apparently engage in a summer clean out- the Premier League side is going to ‘filter’ its side and sell the players that are clearly not adding anything to the team. Konoplyanka would add tremendous quality to the Spurs side as Sherwood’s team would look to have a better outing in the league next season.
