David Villa has become the first major signing for the MLS newly formed franchise New York City.
Atletico Madrid striker David Villa declared that he has penned down a 3 year contract with to MLS franchise New York City. The Spaniard will now feature in Major Soccer League which will commence from March 2015.
A striker with great vision and temperament, David Villa played a significant role in Atletico Madrid’s successful chase for La Liga title this season. Therefore it was baffling to see that despite a great season with Atletico Madrid, in which he scored 15 goals in 36 matches, He was not offered a new contract by the Spanish club.
The spaniard, who was a free transfer this season,had earlier described New York City’s offer as ‘irresistible’ stating “It is an irresistible project for me and my family, it is very, very good. It is about football and I have to accept it. I will be a fan of Atletico all my life for what they have given me this year.” Villa added, “It has been a great project for me both personally as well as sporting and now I face a new challenge which is what I have always looked to do in my career and my life. I would like to thank the people at Atletico and those that tried to convince me to stay, like Cholo (coach Diego Simone) and the rest of the coaching staff.”
The club later on confirmed the news on its twitter account stating “Welcome to New York City: David Villa (@Guaje7Villa) officially signs as #NYCFC’s first ever player. #VillatoNYCFC.”
Villa, who enjoyed enormous success both at club and international level said “Throughout my career, I’ve always tried to keep pushing myself to achieve new targets, and this represents another important goal for me,” He continued “I want to try and help MLS continue to grow, through playing, working hard, scoring goals and at the same time try to make New York City FC become the best team in the league.” expressing his desire to place the club on number 1 spot.
Praising the world-class striker NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis said “David will be a shining example of what it will mean to be a New York City player and a leader for us on and off the field. He is hard working, he is a natural competitor, he is a winner at heart, and he is a terrific man. David has checked every box for what we were looking for in our first signing and it is a great day to be a member of this growing family of a club.”
