Though reports suggest that Di Maria is on his way out of Real Madrid, fans and players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos have urged the Argentine to stay put and refuse offers from Manchester United.
The Argentine was unsettled this summer despite winning the Champions League with Madrid and reports suggested that he fell out with the board over his demands for a renewed contract. Since then Real Madrid have gone on to buy Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez while Di Maria is still looking for a club that will meet his hefty price tag.
But according to reports, both the fans and the players are keen to not let the Argentine slip out of Santiago Bernabeu and understandably so. Despite the presence of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad, it was Di Maria who was most effective throughout the season last year. While Gareth Bale lost the first half of the season due to his lack of fitness, Ronaldo lost steam towards the end following a string of injuries. The one man who stood up and made a difference was Angel di Maria.
Santiago Bernabeu too made their feelings known after reserving their loudest cheers for the Argentine who came on late into the second half against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. Replacing Luka Modric, Di Maria showed exactly why Real Madrid were making a big blunder by letting him go after making an immediate impact in the game.
So much so that even Diego Simeone applauded Di Maria’s efforts, claiming that he was the best player in the Real Madrid squad, even better that Ronaldo and Bale.
“The game changed with Di Maria. It’s logical – he’s the best player they have. He’s the player most likely to create openings in the opposition half.”
Di Maria is known for creating spaces in the opposition’s box and has a bunch of tricks up his sleeve. His pace and dribbling abilities make him one of the most dangerous players for the Los Blancos and reports suggest that both Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos have urged Florentino Perez personally to not let him leave.
Speaking after the match against Atletico Madrid, Ramos said that Di Maria is one of the best players in the team and the defender believes that the Argentine does not intend on leaving the club.
“It’s clear that Di María was very good last season and that he is a player who is really loved by the fans. I’m not one for recommendations. We live in a democratic country. Di Maria knows what it is to be out and he’s at Real Madrid.”
“I don’t think Di Maria’s intention is to leave and in my cause, I signed up to be here for life.”
It was Cristiano Ronaldo who asked Perez to hold on to Di Maria last season and it seems that the Portuguese has stepped up his efforts again in order to make sure Real Madrid hold on to their creative midfielder. And with the transfer deadline fast approaching, it will be interesting to see how the Di Maria transfer saga pans out.
