Chelsea are ready to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of long term target William Carvalho.
The Red Devils have been in hunt for the Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder for a long while now and the 22 year old was constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford last season. It has been suggested that the 20 time league champions are still the favourites to sign the player. However, recent reports indicate that the Portuguese international might be on his way to London instead as Jose Mourinho is interested in acquiring the player. It will be interesting to see where the player actually moves as earlier in May, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claimed Liverpool were favorites to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
Carvalho plays in the heart of the pitch primarily in the holding role but can move further up or further back. He has been remarked as the ‘revelation of Portugal’ kast season by the press as he has been in sublime form and has put on some awe-worthy performances. Carvalho shields the Sporting defence efficiently and is also good in starting attacks.
It is understood that Sporting are hoping for around £37m for a player they consider a valuable asset- someone they want to retain, but know they probably won’t be able to do so. Reports state that the sum asked by the Portuguese club seems a little excessive to United, who have already spent considerably with the big signings of Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw. Express claim that Chelsea think that an initial offer of £11m plus an offer to take a player on loan next season will be enough to negotiate a deal for the talented 22 year old.
Carvalho’s buy-out clause is believed to be £37m and Sporting president made it very clear that he won’t take any lesser than that for the sale of his club’s asset and remarked:
“There is nothing inevitable, but I am almost certain, if not absolutely certain that William will continue at Sporting. You never know when a club might appear and be interested in taking him by paying the release clause. Now, William is very satisfied, he is happy and so are we.”
Chelsea might be able to attain the services of the player as Carvalho was primarily linked with the club during David Moyes’ time and Van Gaal’s reported targets are different. Having secured Hererra, who can also play in the deeper role, the Dutchman might not want to spend that kind of money for someone he doesn’t regard a priority signing. But it has recently emerged that reports in Portugal are doing rounds that Manchester United officials have traveled to Portugal in an effort to sign the player.
Chelsea already have Nemanja Matic for the deeper role and have also signed Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, as a direct replacement for departing Frank Lampard. But its always good to have two players for one spot, as it avoids complacency from both the players as well as gives adds depth. The London club certainly have enough money to get the player so they won’t be deterred from the asking price
