PSG are on the verge of completing a record move for Chelsea defender David Luiz. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is planning to fill the void with Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane.
Brazilian center back David Luiz is all set to join his international counter part Thiago Silva at PSG in a record breaking move for a defender. Reports suggests that Chelsea has approved the sale of their center back in a move worth around £40 million, which will be the new world record sum for a defender. If this deal goes through, David Luiz will replace Thiago Silva as the most expensive defender in the history of football.
Since making his move from Benfica to Chelsea, David Luiz has established himself as one of the best defenders in Premier League. The defender had attracted the interest of La Liga giants FC Barcelona, Bundesliga Champions Bayern Munich, and was expected to make a move this summer. Even though Barcelona were favourites at some moment, PSG almost sealed the deal for David Luiz by agreeing terms with Chelsea and conducting his medical in Brazil. The money involved in the deal is expected to help Chelsea to bring in adequate replacement at Stamford Bridge as well.
John Terry and Gary Cahill formed a solid center back partnership last season as David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic had to settle for stop gap roles. The sale of David Luiz isn’t expected to hamper Chelsea as John Terry is going strong even now and they have the money and time available to look for a good replacement.
Manager Jose Mourinho, isn’t interested in playing the waiting game and has identified his Real Madrid ward Raphael Varane as a perfect replacement. The France youngster is tipped to become a world beater and showed some glimpses of his ability when Mourinho gave him a chance during his tenure at Real Madrid. The duo is said to be in good terms and Jose Mourinho believes that he can convince the Real Madrid youngster to make a switch to Stamford Bridge.
Raphael Varane is behind Sergio Ramos and Pepe in Real Madrid pecking order. An injury has limited the role of Raphael Varane this season under Carlo Ancelotti and since then he is waiting for his opportunity at Real Madrid. This hasn’t reduced his stock and Jose Mourinho is targeting the France youngster by offering more first team football. The possibility of displacing veteran John Terry to establish himself as a regular at Chelsea might appeal to Raphael Varane.
If Chelsea can replace David Luiz with Raphael Varane, it will be a master stroke by Jose Mourinho. Can Jose Mourinho pull the rabbit out of this deal?
