Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that Juan Mata and Michael Essien can leave the club in January.
Juan Mata, who has been a crucial player for the Blues since joining them in 2011, has had a limited role to play since the arrival of Jose Mourinho at the helm. The Portuguese manager prefers Brazilian midfield Oscar in the role of a play-maker behind the striker and he has found it hard to use both Mata and Oscar in the same team. The Spaniard also hasn’t performed to his usual high standards consistently this season, which certainly hasn’t helped his cause.
Mata did start in the match against Southampton, but was substituted in the 53rd minute of the game as Mourinho brought on Oscar and Willian. Those substitutions changed the match for Chelsea as Oscar scored one and created another. But Mata was clearly upset about being subbed off so early in the second half and avoided his manager when he came off the pitch. His reactions has added fuel to the speculations surrounding his future at the club. Reports suggest that the 25-year-old is desperate to leave the club in the winter transfer window in order to gain regular first team action ahead of the World Cup.

Jose Mourinho didn’t make much of Mata’s reaction during the game, but insisted that although he would like to retain him in the squad, there is possibility of both Essien and Mata leaving the club in this transfer window.
“The window is open and when the window is open anything can happen.
“We don’t think a lot will happen for us. Do we have to react to certain things? Yes. If someone really wants to leave and someone leaves we probably have to bring someone in but we are going to do things in a very calm way.
“I want to keep him [Juan Mata]. I don’t want him to go. That is my opinion, my wish, but my door is open.
“The club’s door is open too so when a player wants to speak to us we are there waiting for them.
“If you are asking do you want the club to sell him, I don’t want to.” – The Chelsea manager said.
Another player who is reportedly unsettled at the club is Michael Essien and his agent has recently claimed that the 31-year-old, who has made only two starts in the league so far, will leave the club as he looks to play more regularly. He has also indicated that Essien could possibly join Bastia in this window.
“He will leave Chelsea. He wants to play more, and after talking to Mourinho has made this decision. Italy? It’s an important league, I can’t exclude it, even if there have been no contacts for the moment. For sure, he won’t join Bastia.” – Fabien Piveteau said.
Jose Mourinho has seemingly accepted this decision and said that he can’t guarantee playing time to any player in the squad.
“I offer nobody – not Michael, not nobody (guaranteed playing time).
“I understand that players think about national team, the World Cup and playing regularly, but my players have to think of the team before the players. Michael knows that perfectly.” – Mourinho explained.
