Chelsea FC have completed the signing of Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah from FC Basel.
With this move Mohamed Salah has now become the first Egyptian to sign for the London club and will hope to bigger impact than his countrymen have had in this league in the past. The 21-year-old started out his footballing career at El Mokawloon before joining FC Basel back in 2012. He impressed everyone with his performances for the Swiss and also managed to grab a permanent spot in the Egyptian national side.
Salah caught everyone’s attention with some sparkling performances in the Champions League, most notably against Chelsea. In fact he has scored two goals against the London club, the first of which arrived in the Europa League last season. A lot of European clubs were scouting him since last season and it was only a matter of time before Basel had to sell him.
Liverpool were competition with Chelsea in the race for his signature, but the Blues were determined to sign in order strengthen their squad as they look to compete for multiple trophies. Chelsea lost both Juan Mata and Kevin De Bruyne in this transfer window and needed a reinforcement to provide them with enough cover in attack.
Salah is unlikely to be a regular starter in the side at the moment as Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian seem to be Jose Mourinho’s first choice attacking triumvirate, but Salah is sure to get opportunities in the FA Cup and also when Mourinho decides to rest some of his key players before or after Champions league fixtures. Salah is cup-tied and won’t be available for European matches this season.
Mohamed Salah expressed his delight at having secured this move and hoped to have a bright future at London.
“I’m very happy to sign for Chelsea, such a big club in the world. I hope I can make the Chelsea supporters happy and have a good career at the club for many years to come.” – The new Chelsea signing said.
Salah becomes the second big signing for Chelsea in this transfer window after the arrival of Nemanja Matic. He has signed a five-year contract with the Blues and will wear jersey number 15. The transfer fee involved in this deal is believed to be around £11million.
“Chelsea Football Club today completed the signing of Mohamed Salah from FC Basel.
“The Egyptian international signed a five-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the number 15 shirt.” – Read an official statement on Chelsea’s website.
Jose Mourinho also welcomed and confirmed this deal ahead of their FA Cup fixture against Stoke City and hoped that Salah can fulfil his immense potential at the club.
“We like the fact that he can play the same way our attacking players do, which is players with adaptability, to play right, left, or behind the striker.
“He’s young, he’s fast, he’s creative, he’s enthusiastic. When we analysed him he looks the kind of humble personality on the pitch, ready to work for the team and to work and to adapt himself to a new life.
“We think with him and (Andre) Schurrle, (Eden) Hazard, Oscar and Willian we will be fine.
“We lose an experienced top player like Juan, but we bring in a young player with great potential.
“He has some experience in Europe, the Europa League, Champions League, so he’s not a naive boy arriving in the jungle.
“Hopefully he comes and hopefully with the talented players we have around in the same positions we all can develop together.” – The Chelsea manager said.
