Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that his gradually evolving into a strong team and that Essien’s transfer to AC Milan was the right move for him.

Chelsea will host London rivals West Ham United at Stamford Bridge tomorrow as they look to maintain their seven match winning streak in all competitions. It is important that Jose Mourinho’s men maintain this momentum before their crucial fixture against Manchester City next week. Considering West Ham’s recent run of form of one win in their last nine matches in all competitions, the Blues will go into this game with a lot of confidence about getting a positive result from it.

But Jose Mourinho feels that the Hammers will provide a tough test for his side and that West Ham will now perform better as a lot of their key players have returned from injuries.

“West Ham are in trouble in the table but I look at them and I feel a difficult match.

“They have new players, and they have had time to work and rest from the difficult Christmas period they had, especially because they had so many injured players.” – The Chelsea manager said.

The Portuguese manager also shared champagne with the media during his post-match press conference in order to celebrate his 51st birthday. When asked about whether he will be similarly celebrating a league title at the end of this season, Mourinho replied:

“I don’t think so.

“We have to drink champagne because we are improving a lot, the team and the players, so the prospects of champagne in the future are good. We are going in a good direction.

“We are playing well. The last game against Stoke was a 1-0 but a good 1-0. There was quality individually and collectively, and we defended and pressed well also. You never know what is going to happen in the next match but the results are arriving as a consequence of the team playing very good football.

“We have to try to keep the good form we have and let things happen naturally. I’ve always said since the beginning of the season that the main objective this season is to build a team, and the best way to build a team is to compete for things.

“When you play Europa League there is no evolution. When you play in the Premier League 20 points behind the leader, no evolution. Evolution comes at the same time you build a team and you have serious competition.

“We need this. We need to be top three or four and we need to play against Manchester City only one, two or three points behind. We need to feel what the Champions League knockout is like because some of the players have only played the group stage.

“These things are coming to us so I can believe next season we are going to be a really strong team from day one.” – Mourinho added.

Mourinho also provided his views on the departure of Michael Essien. The Chelsea manager feels that this was the right move for the midfielder and that the club has replaced him adequately with the arrival of Nemanja Matic.

“He’s a player everyone loves in this club but it is a fantastic situation for him and we didn’t want to stop him. He deserved that the club let him go on a free transfer and with Matic we covered the situation in midfield and we could let Michael go.” – He explained.

Mourinho also disclosed the new signing Mohamed Salah won’t be a part of this squad for this game, along with Fernando Torres, who is suffering from a knee injury.
