Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge on Sunday. One of the finest performers for Chelsea ironically was former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard provided a fabulous assist for Chelsea’ second goal scored by Diego Costa.
The summer recruit had to face jeers from the fans of his former club.
When quizzed afterwards about the victory and whether it felt sweet to serve a befitting reply to some of the Arsenal fan boos, the midfielder told Sky Sports, “Not at all. I have huge respect for Arsenal – they gave me everything when I was little. Without them I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t have won what I have won.
“I have huge respect and I take it in a positive way. I know they love me and it is all because we were together once. Sometimes, circumstances mean these things can happen. But I have always said it – I am not scared. They will always be in my heart forever.
“But this is football, I am in this fantastic football club now playing with great players, a great coach and great fans and I want to win everything.
“I am hungry and really want to do well for this club. I hope I can make it in the future.”
Manager Jose Mourinho was especially pleased with the Spanish International’s performance on Sunday. When questioned about what he thought of Fabregas’ performance, Mourinho said, “Fantastic. But to be fair he didn’t have this performance because the opponent was Arsenal and he had a special motivation.
“He’s been doing this since day one. I don’t remember a game this season where he was not fantastic. To play against his team, the team where he was born or made for football, I think shows even more his commitment with us and his professionalism.”
Fabregas has played brilliantly since his arrival at the club and has helped Chelsea remain unbeaten and at the top of the table with his exquisite performances. The former Barcelona player has provided seven assists so far for the club.
Arsenal had the first option to buy Fabregas back from Barcelona but Arsene Wenger rejected the opportunity citing that he already had Mesut Özil playing in the same position.
