Manchester City and Chelsea are set to go head-to-head for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.
Chelsea will battle Manchester City in pursuit of Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema with the French forward being linked with a possible Bernabeu exit according to reports. The La Liga forward’s agent has made comments which are clearly suggestive of a move to either clubs.
Agent Jonathan Hope commented:
“I’ve proposed rekindling the interest from Manchester City for Karim. After his fine form in El Clasico I’ve proposed him as a summer target.
“Karim would love to play in the Premier League and Manchester City would be his choice of club, however reuniting with Mourinho at Chelsea would also be of interest.
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is clearly a big admirer of the player as no outfield player has featured more than the French striker. Speculation suggest that difficulties with the current contract extension dealings could lead to summer sale.
It would take a sum of around £40m to get the former Lyon man to England.
Benzema had been linked heavily with a move to Arsenal in the summer. The summer ended with Wenger getting Ozil, the midfield maestro to North London instead.
In previous campaigns Benzema had to contest for the starting spot with present Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain, but since the Argentine’s departure, has had an assured starting spot and has truly made full use of it. The player has 17 goals and 6 assists to his name in the league. He has 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 games (in all competitions so far). Clearly the forward has been in good form and Real Madrid could really cash in on it as Chelsea and Manchester City are both big spenders.
Jose Mourinho has not hidden the fact that his side needs strike reinforcements as the current trio of Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba are not ideal for the future. Having worked with Benzema before, he would know the qualities the Frenchman possesses and would know that the 26 year old is ideal for spearheading the Blues attack.
Manchester City have world-class forwards in the form of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo. However, Dzeko seems to be on his way out of Manchester and this might cause Pellegrini to want another proven goal-scorer to come to the Eithad. Still, as one can see, City have ample of replacements in case the Bosnian departs from the club. However, with Benzema’s agent stating Manchester City is his preferred destination, it seems that City already have the lead in the player’s possible move to the Premier League
