Bayern Munich confirmed that Liverpool‘s Pepe Reina was set to sign for the Bavarian giants after clearing his medical

Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, who has been a marginalized figure with the Reds is set to complete his signature with the Bavarian giants.

The Spaniard joined Liverpool on the tour after spending last season on loan at Napoli. After the arrival of Simon Mignolet last season, it was clear that Reina won’t be the number one choice for Liverpool. He came back from his one-season long loan and ever since, his future seems uncertain. A number of sides, notably Napoli, had shown interested in signing the player but his £110,000 per week salary has put off the interested clubs

He joined Liverpool in the pre-season tour of USA but trained away from the main group during most sessions and wasn’t even named among the substitutes for any of the matches as Rodgers shuffled between Mignolet and Jones for his goalkeeping choice and kept youngster Danny Ward on the bench. It seemed certain that he didn’t have a future with the club. Reports were making rounds that Liverpool would terminate Reina’s contract by mutual consent.

But recently, Bayern Munich came in the picture and moved swiftly to capture the Spaniard for a reported  £1.5m. The Liverpool goalkeeper will team up with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola. He would obviously play back up to Manuel Neur, but in Reina, Guardiola would get a great cover for the World Cup winner. And for a meager amount.

While at Anfield, Reina won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Super Cup and added the Coppa Italia to his list of accolades in Naples last season.

The Munich club confirmed the news of Reina passing the medical on twitter

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed that a deal had been agreed upon, “Pepe Reina was eager to come to Bayern Munich. He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that, in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes, will always remain the number one.”

He added, “Pep wanted a keeper like Manuel Neuer who’s capable of joining in the build-up play. You can never take for granted finding a man with his experience and quality who’s prepared to accept the number two position. Michael Reschke has done very well while we were in the USA”

Reina too was visibly happy after completing his medical. He said, “I’m delighted to be coming to one of the world’s biggest clubs”
