Bayern Munich have confirmed that they are in talks with Spanish giants Real Madrid for the transfer of former Liverpool FC midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Xabi Alonso is set to become Bayern Munich’s sixth signing this season as the German club look to strengthen their midfield, which has suffered due to injuries to key players. Fitness concerns of Thiago Alcantara, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez have left Bayern short in numbers at the center of the park, especially with Toni Kroos joining Real Madrid this summer.

The German champions were keen to sign a short-term replacement for Martinez and Xabi Alonso seems like the ideal addition for them. The former Liverpool midfielder was left on the bench during Real Madrid’s opening day clash against Cordoba. Lukas Modric, Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez seem to be Carlo Ancelotti’s first choice midfielder trio at the moment.

Bayern Munich have opened talks with Real Madrid for the transfer of Xabi Alonso and the Spaniard is expected undergo a medical today. The transfer fee is reported to be £8m with Alonso signing a two year contract with the German club. Bayern Munich deputy chairman Jan-Christian Dreesen has insisted that they have reached an ‘agreement in principal’ and has hoped to officially announce the deal soon.

“We have an agreement with Xabi Alonso. And we hope to find an agreement with Real Madrid in the next one or two days.

“We are not talking about a loan this would be a permanent signing.” – Dreesan said.

Sporting director Matthias Sammer has insisted that injuries to key players meant they had to sign a replacement and believes Alonso can deliver for the club.

“If that will work, I would have a very good feeling for the club and the coach.

“After the injuries of Thiago and Schweinsteiger we have been looking for someone, who could help us immediately. And Xabi Alonso could play on top level for two years.” – Sammer said in an interview.
