Barcelona Attacker Ibrahim Afellay is in demand, as his contract is set to expire in 12 months time. English Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are believed to be chasing the signature of the Netherlands star amidst injury concerns.

Netherlands International Ibrahim Afellay was a star, when FC Barcelona secured his signature from PSV Eindhoven in 2011. The diminutive attacking midfielder was making serious waves in Eredivise. He emerged as the Dutch Football Talent of the Year in 2007 and since then he started to put in amazing performances one after the other. By 2011, he was an established star in Netherlands team and Barcelona cashed in on an opportunity as Ibrahim Afellay was nearing the end of contract with PSV Eindhoven.

Ibrahim Afellay’s €3 million transfer to La Liga giants Barcelona was expected to take his career to the next level.  After realizing his potential, Barcelona had inserted a buyout clause of €100 million to ward off his suitors. In 2011-12 he showed brief glimpses of quality but a series of injuries and loss of form limited his heroics afterwards. Ibrahim Afellay has played only a handful of games in the last two seasons. Even a loan move to German Bundesliga side Schalke 04 was arranged in between but it didn’t help him to reach his potential. In 2013-14 season, the dutch international has seen only 26 minutes of competitive action and is looking for an exit route from FC Barcelona to set his career back on track.

Ibrahim Afellay will be a financially viable option for the clubs looking for an attacking midfielder, as his contact is about to expire in 12 months. English Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are in the lookout to add more attacking weapons to their armoury. The duo are targeting the versatile Barcelona attacker who will come at an affordable rate as FFP is looming large over the clubs across the continent.

Premier League runners up Liverpool are in dire need of a winger to strengthen their side ahead of UEFA Champions League battle next season. Southampton winger Adam Lallana is one of their top targets, but he will cost around 25 million. Liverpool are looking for alternative options at the moment and the idea of getting Ibrahim Afellay on a cut price deal has re-ignited their interest on the Dutchman.

When it comes to Tottenham Hotspur, they have an abundance of Attacking midfielders and wingers on their roster. None of them clicked last season and that has paved the way for a dismal campaign for the North London side. Chairman Daniel Levy is always looking for bargain buys and the availability of Barcelona attacker has interested the Spurs think tank as well.

FC Barcelona will be looking to secure their future in this summer transfer window as a transfer ban is looming over their head. Ibrahim Afellay might be sold to make way for new additions, and at the moment Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are looking like the front runners for his signature.
