Atletico de Kolkata owner Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that Spanish giants Atletico Madrid will visit the city for a friendly in August.
Indian Super League franchise Atletico de Kolkata has already gained a lot of attention from Indian as well as European media, mostly due to their connection with reigning La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid. The franchise which will be based in Kolkata is owned by the joint venture of former Indian cricket Sourav Ganguly, Spanish club Atletico Madrid, chairman of Ambuja Neotia group Harshavardhan Neotia and vice-chairman of RPG enterprise Sanjiv Goenka.
With the ISL set to kick-off in September, Atletico Madrid will visit Kolkata in August to play a pre-season friendly with an invitational team, Sourav Ganguly has confirmed. This is expected to draw a lot of fans, who will be keen to see the La Liga stars in action in their backyard. Ganguly also shared details about the status of their franchise and how closely they are working with the Madrid based side in the background.
“An exhibition match is planned — Atletico versus an invitational XI. We’d like to field a strong invitational team, to compete against Atletico. The idea is to have a good game.
“Our jersey colours will be red and white, the same as Atletico’s, and the logo has been finalised.
“Our focus now is on putting the Atletico de Kolkata team and the coaching staff together. We’re waiting for an update on the FIFA rules and a draft from IMG-Reliance, the promoters.” – Sourav Ganguly said.
