Manchester City have warned off Atletico Madrid, who are closely linked with a move for Spanish striker Negredo

It was reported earlier this week that Atletico Madrid had made Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo their number one target to replace imminently departing Diego Costa. The ‘Rojiblancos’ were said to even have begun talks with the club and some Spanish newspapers even claimed that the La Liga champions had submitted a €15 million bid. Marca claimed that City had shunned this approach and had said that they wouldn’t let their striker go cheaply and were not willing to listen to any offers below €30 million.

Reports suggest Negredo wants a move back to La Liga, where he has enjoyed numerous successful seasons. The Spanish striker moved to City just last season following his £20m move from Sevilla last summer. He enjoyed a spectacular start, but gradually fizzled away and got receded to the bench. The Madrid born striker only contributed from the bench during the latter part of City’s season. He still managed to score 23 goals in all competitions for the Manchester club.

Atletico Madrid are going to have their side considerably diminished as almost all of their members are attracting interest from clubs all over Europe. The Spanish club particularly needs to make additions in the strike force as Diego Costa is poised to join Chelsea and David Villa has already left on a free transfer. Diego Simeone’s side have attained the services of Argentinian prodigy Andres Correa from San Lorenzo, although this signing is for the future and is not one that would fill the void made by the departures from the club right now.

Atletico have been heavily linked with a move for Romelu Lukaku, but the Belgian’s situation remains unclear. It is not certain whether his possible arrival would be on loan or if Jose Mourinho is willing to sell the player and reduce the quality in his depth.

However, it is now reported that Manchester City have made it clear that they will not be letting the player go. It is understood that Pellegrini considers him essential for the squad, as the former Sevilla man possesses a lot of talent, and is effective, even if asked to come off the bench. Although it seems more like City haggling with Atletico for more money for the player’s services. Negredo turns 29 soon, and it Simeone would not want to spend a large sum for a player who does not have enough time in him.

For the player, a move to the Spanish team seems ideal as he would only contribute to City’s next season from the bench, but could prove to be an important part of the Atletico side defending their title.
