Atletico Madrid are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.
Romelu Lukaku seems to be edging close to Atletico Madrid switch, indicate reports.
The Belgian international is currently with the national team in Brazil. He has enjoyed a highly successful year on loan at Everton. Before that, he enjoyed another fruitful loan spell at West Brom. He joined from Anderlecht for a deal worth up to £18m in 2011 and has scored 33 goals in the two seasons on loan. Chelsea have all but confirmed the arrival of Diego Costa from Atletico, and it seems that Diego Simone wants a Blue to replace his departing striker.
Lukaku also indicated that he could leave the London club this summer as he recently said, “You know Chelsea: every year they buy a new top strikerI remember coming into the dressing room last year and seeing Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba and going: Whoah! What’s happening here? But no problem. Many clubs are interested in me. At this stage I have to look to myself. I have to play a good World Cup. That’s very interesting for all the players looking for a transfer, and I must be one of them. Chelsea know my point of view.”
The La Liga champions are going to be considerably diminished as a host of players are linked with a move away from the Spanish side. Striker David Villa has already departed for newly made MLS side New York City, midfielder Tiago is poised to leave the club and Koke is a target for numerous clubs.
Diego Simeone’s side have attained the services of Argentinian prodigy Andres Correa from San Lorenzo, although this signing is for the future and is not one that would fill the void made by the departures from the club right now.
Chelsea are likely to accept another loan deal for the player and Atletico could possibly try for a temporary switch. But Lukaku has expressed in the past that he wants his future to be clear and favors a permanent move. There is not a paucity for the player’s demand as Tottenham, Everton, Roma, Wolfsburg and Juventus are among the European clubs that have shown interest for the striker. Lukaku admitted to interest from Atletico but he said that it was not his focus as he tries to recover from an ankle injury ahead of Belgium’s first World Cup group game against Algeria next week. He said, ” I have a contract with Chelsea after this summer and I am not focusing on any move to Atletico.”
Atletico have so far enjoyed a busy transfer window and have also signed goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Moyà and defender Guilherme Siqueira. Siqueira’s addition has been vital as defenders Filipe Luis and Miranda have both also been linked with moves away from the club.
