Atletico Madrid are close to completing the singing of Antoine Griezmann. Javier Pastore is another player the club is interested in bringing in

Atletico Madrid are closing in on the €25 million [£19.8m] signing of Real Sociedad star Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from his present club and Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, PSG and AS Monaco were all linked with the player.

Griezmann can play right across the attacking midfield 3, or even as the lone striker, but he has mostly been employed on the left flank.  He enjoyed an incredible season last time out scoring 16 goals and notching 4 assists in the league.

Spanish daily AS report: “The conversations between the two clubs are at an advanced stage and a deal could be finalised in the next few hours. Simeone thinks the player would be a fantastic addition to his team, and perfect to play alongside Mandzukic, with Koke and Arda behind creating the danger.”

Simeone was said to be desperate to land Griezmann after losing striking duo David Villa and Diego Costa in the same season. The Atletico Madrid manager looks to be getting what he wants. He has so far made shrewd signings with the sum generated by the sales of the players who departed last season’s La Liga Champions. Chelsea have paid generously for Diego Costa and Filipe Luis.

Griezmann possesses incredible pace and amazing technical ability that make him a huge threat for any side. He creates chances along with converting them, as was visible last season. The fact that he can be fielded in different positions only adds to his profile. The French international also regularly tracks back, and does not get lazy to contribute in the defence.

Atletico have replaced the deadly Diego Costa with the world-class Mario Mandzukic. Angel Correa, the young Argentina prodigy, has also been roped in by the club (although his signing is for the future). Koke has extended his contract with the club which is great news as the player was being targeted by clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, two sides that could afford his asking price. Guilherme Siqueira was brought in very early on as the club was aware of Chelsea’s interest in Filipe Luis, and the talented player was brought in as his direct replacement

Spanish reports also suggest that Atletico have been in talks with French side PSG regarding a possible move for Javier Pastore. AS report: ‘The Rojiblancos have been working on the Paris Saint-Germain man’s signing for several weeks, and are keen to fill the hole left by the departure of Diego Ribas. Talks have accelerated in recent weeks as the two clubs come closer to reaching a deal. ‘

It is believed that Pastore is not keen about staying at PSG, as he feels he deserves more playing time than he got last season. The midfielder made 29 appearances for the Paris side last season, out of which he only started 18 times. He only managed one goal and another three assists, which is a bad record for any attacker. Pastore has not been a preferred option by Laurent Blanc, as was visible last season. With regular game time, the player can perform incredibly well. He is said to be missing his leading role at Palmero. In the 11/12 season, the player scored 13 times and grabbed another five assists for the Italian team.

Atlético are said to be long-time admirers of the 25-year-old, and were close to sealing a move for him last season itself. However, their task for securing the player’s services will be tough as Juventus are also keen on bringing the Argentinian to their side.
