It will be a top of the table clash at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday, when Atletico de Kolkata lock horns with Chennaiyin FC. Both teams have accumulated 12 points from seven games, but the Kolkata outfit sit atop the Indian Super League (ISL) standings owing to their superior goal difference. However, the top two teams head into the fixture on the back of some poor results. While Atletico de Kolkata are winless in their last three outings, Chennaiyin FC have won just one of their previous five games. Hence, both Kolkata and Chennaiyin will be keen to turn their fortunes as the ISL advances towards the business-end.
Team News and Tactical Brief:
Atletico de Kolkata
The Red and White’s have somewhat lost their momentum after a flying start to their ISL campaign. Atletico de Kolkata have managed to pick up just two points from their previous three fixtures, which includes their maiden loss in the ISL at the hands of FC Pune City last week. Antonio Habas’ side will be desperate to bounce back from the 3-1 loss by claiming a positive result against Chennaiyin FC. Influential midfielder Jofre Mateu, who was suspended for the Pune game, will be welcomed back to the squad for the crunch match. Atletico de Kolkata, who have remained at the summit since the beginning of the ISL, will be eager to maintain their position. The Kolkata giants will be looking up to Fikru Teferra to continue his goalscoring form. Another positive thing for Kolkata is that they will be playing after a week’s gap, while Chennaiyin will just have a three-day recovery period, following their grueling 1-1 draw with Pune on Tuesday.
Probable Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Subhasish Roy Chowdhury, Kingshuk Debnath, Arnab Mondal, Josemi, Biswajit Saha, Ofentse Nato, Borja Fernandez, Jofre Mateu, Baljit Sahni, Luis Garcia, Fikru Teferra
Chennaiyin FC have also endured a recent dip in form, with the Southern giants drawing their last three matches. Marco Materazzi’s side drew against third-placed Pune earlier in the week, in a game which saw their marquee player Elano, who scored a last-gasp penalty in the 1-1 draw with Atletico de Kolkata on 4th November, failing to find the back of the net for the first time in the ISL. The Brazilian, who has thus far scored eight goals in the competition, missed a spot-kick and also saw his free-kick ricochet off the cross-piece against Pune. Chennaiyin FC had to rely on a late Stiven Mendoza strike, which earned his side a point at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex. However, besides Elano and Mendoza, the whole Chennai team also have to be on top of their game if they wish to topple the league leaders at their own backyard.
Probable Starting XI (4-1-2-1-2): Gennaro Bracigliano, Gouramangi Singh, Bernard Mendy, Mikael Silvestre, Dhanachandra Singh, Marco Materazzi, Harmanjot Khabra, Denson Devdas, Elano, Stiven Mendoza, Balwant Singh
Atletico de Kolkata 1-1 Chennaiyin FC
Both teams will not want to lose this high voltage clash, and a point will enable them to remain towards the top-end of the table.
