AS Roma have beaten the likes of Juventus, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid To Sign Juan Manuel Iturbe.
The Italian side have completed the signing of the highly rated Juan Manuel Iturbe from Hellas Verona for a reported sum of £17.4million. Roma revealed the transfer fee could reach £19.4m depending on performance-related bonuses.
It was reported last week that Juventus had reached an agreement with Verona over Iturbe’s signing. Juventus recently parted company with Antonio Conte who is an admirer of the Argentine and it was reported that he personally called the young star to persuade him to join last season’s league winners. Goal.com reported: ‘Iturbe met Verona sporting director Sean Sogliano and Juve’s equivalent Fabio Guild on Wednesday morning and expressed his desire to push through a move as swiftly as possible.’
Clearly, an agreement couldn’t be reached between the three parties and it was stated that Juve were unwilling to pay more than £15 for the Argentine.
Hellas Verona’s statement stated: “The club Hellas Verona FC wishes you the best of luck in football to Juan Manuel Iturbe, passed definitively to club AS Roma. The one player who shall never be forgotten for what he has demonstrated on and off the pitch, a special and unique boy, who became a first-team regular at Verona and then a champion. Good luck”
Porto sent Iturbe on loan to Verona last season and the Serie A outfit decided to make his move permanent in May for £12m– with the player scoring eight goals and grabbing four assists in 33 league appearances.
The 21 year old was in fantastic form last season for the promoted Hellas Verona and was an instrumental part in the team’s impressive tenth placed finish. He attracted a lot of interest from clubs all over Europe and was constantly linked with Liverpool. Arsenal and Chelsea were the other English clubs to show interest in the 21 year old. Juventus, as stated before, were keen on landing him, while rivals AC Milan were also linked with the player as it was thought that Iturbe himself was considering a move to Milan. Last season’s La Liga winners and Champions League runners up Atletico Madrid were set to offer €25m plus striker Leo Baptistao for the player dubbed as the ‘next Lionel Messi’
