Arsenal go into Saturday’s game fifth in the table and nine points off the leaders Chelsea but Wenger believes his side can still compete for the title this season.

“I think [the] attitude [has been] fantastic, dedication fantastic, on the efficiency front we can do better,” said Wenger in the pre-match press conference today. “If you look at the chances we have created and the chances we have given away, I think we have created many chances and our finishing was not always at the expected level.”

“We give very few chances away but those that we have given away are of quality, and that is what we want to do better.”

“I don’t write us off, I let [other] people do it. That is a little bit linked with mathematics.”

“It doesn’t consider against who we played, how many times we played away, what is the [quality] of the team we played against, what missing players we had in the big games. That is absolutely normal but I have a strong belief we will come back and we can just prove that on the pitch.”

“Chelsea are in a strong position at the moment. I believe it would not be realistic to just think now that we’ll catch back Chelsea very quickly. We have to get consistent results to get a chance to come back. Personally, I’m more focused on the quality of our games and on the consistency of our results, before we think about coming back on Chelsea.”

Wenger believes Burnley are a much better side than their position on the table suggests. The Clarets visit Emirates Stadium on Saturday bottom of the table and have failed to register a win so far this season. Arsenal are clear favorites for this tie but Wenger believes Burnley should not be underestimated.

“They are better than their points would suggest, that’s what the stats show,” the manager said. “They have been punished in some games because they couldn’t take their chances.”

“It is important that we are highly focused and expect to play against a strong team, because they are.”

“[Sean Dyche] has done a great job because nobody expected Burnley to be in the Premier League this year. Overall I think his style of play is positive. They create chances if you look at the stats and the consistency of what he has achieved is remarkable.”

“I always believe that quality is linked with consistency and on that front he has taken the maximum out of the potential of his team. That is a sign of quality for a manager.”

Burnley are the only side in the Premier League or Football League without a win and only Aston Villa have scored fewer than their five goals in the top division.
